Chromebook laptop
We live blogged the Google I/O keynote this morning where major announcements were made, including the launch of the Google computer Chromebook manufactured by Samsung and Acer that will be available June 15 in the US for $449 (Samsung WiFi version), $499 (Samsung WiFi+3G version) and $349 (Acer).
?The future is on the web???in a browser?, Google says, so the search giant is bringing its dream to the market in the form of the Chromebook.
For those who did not follow the Google computer story, since the beta model codenamed CR-48 launched last year, here is the deal: the Chromebook runs the Chrome OS and users have access to data and applications only from the web via the Chrome Browser. Google claims that this new ?computing model? enables a higher level of security, since users do not have to install anti-viruses, having to rely on web services and Google ?multi-layers? security including sandboxing, data encryption, and verified boot, features that were in the CR-48, go to this page and this page to get a detailed overview.

Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) has just announced that it has started restoring its game services, although this is just the announcement of the “beginning” of the restoration. When done, most if not all the SOE online games, forums and sites should be back online.
After being hacked, Sony has decided to take its network offline to beef up security. The company says that it has contracted high-profile security companies to work on this project, to ensure end-user information safety. This ranged from upgrading the software, to increasing the level of encryption of user data. Old software is suspected to have contributed to the breach, although Sony has neither confirmed or denied it.

Final Fantasy maker, Square Enix, has just been hacked into – with a couple of websites belonging to Japanese video games maker being compromised. What of the damage? Well, Square Enix has been man enough to own up right from the start (guess they have learnt well from the Sony snafu recently) by confirming that up to 25,000 customers who did register for product updates might have their e-mail addresses stolen. Apart from that, resumes of 350 people who applied for jobs in the Canadian office could also have been copied from Web servers, leading the company to issue the following statement, “Square Enix can confirm a group of hackers gained access to parts of our Eidosmontreal.com website as well as two of our product sites. We immediately took the sites offline to assess how this had happened and what had been accessed, then took further measures to increase the security of these and all of our websites, before allowing the sites to go live again.”

Online file sharing is surely a contentious area that will lead to endless hours of debate at the bar, depending on which side of the divide you are on. The RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) has been seen by many to be a major evil, partly due to their actions which might be interpreted wrongly by selected parties. For instance, having slapped LimeWire, a file-sharing software program, with a $105M settlement suit. How are music artists reacting to that figure? Surely they aren’t too pleased with the result, since $105 million is far less compared to the $1.4 billion that the plaintiffs were seeking, according to attorney Joseph Baio in a statement. Apart from that, LimeWire founder Mark Gorton also did not make any admission of wrongdoing as part of the settlement, further peeving off the artists.

Another day, another device that will hit the FCC’s gates, knocking on its door to be given entrance before it is prodded and tested from all angles and directions so that the masses are able to enjoy its use when released without worrying about it suddenly exploding during use or charging. The latest entrant to go through the FCC’s doors? The Seagate GoFlex Satellite hard drive that will allow you to toss in a network attached storage device to your network – the easy way, of course, without having to go through a time consuming process that involves connecting cables, looking for a right location for your drive near a router, while having a royal headache configuring your network.
