In an attempt to protect the rights of stars, labels, and basically anybody who doesn’t want their content being posted up online illegally, YouTube has decided to school anyone who breaks their rules about Copyrights. If they receive a notification about you breaking a copyright rule, you will be forced to attend “copyright school” where you have to sit through a video lesson and answer a quiz after to show that you understand what copyright means before you’re allowed to upload videos again. If you clean up your act and maintain good behavior after that, there’s even a chance that your copyright strike might be removed (3 strikes gets your account suspended). It sounds like a great way to keep the public educated, not to mention the video lesson is pretty entertaining by itself. Automattic, the folks behind WordPress.com got hacked at the “root” level, which means that the hackers potentially had access to *everything* those servers were hosting, like WordPress.com and Vaultpress, but other services might be affected as well.
The extent of the breach is not known yet, but your information might not be safe anymore, and your password might be compromised already. It really stinks to get hacked, and it can take a lot of time to recover from that, so it’s probably best to take action now. How?

Remember the Walkman phone teaser we reported about last month? Well, since then we haven’t heard anything else about the Walkman phone. Well some folks have reported that the first Walkman Android handset will be called the W15 is it will resember the Xperia X8 in terms of looks. It will pack a 3″ HVGA touchscreen, a “dedicated music chip” (god knows what that could be), a 3.2 megapixel camera, and a 600MHz processor. Other features include a “specially developed touch interface” and special Walkman apps. No word on what version of Android (Gingerbread hopefully) or pricing for the phone, but it is expected to drop later this month or next month. Stay tuned for more details.

Gmail has been pretty customizable in terms of appearances for some time now. You have the ability to set your own colors for pretty much everything on the interface. However there’s been one feature that users could never change and its background image of your interface. Sure you can change themes, but that would mean changing every single color as well. There was no way to set your own background image but all that changes today. Using the Themes tab in Settings to create your own theme, you now have the option of using your own image as the background for the UI in Gmail. You can even select one from your Picasa account (if you have one) if not, you can simply just upload it from your computer. Now you can make a truly personal theme that is different from everybody else’s Gmail account.

Reebok has just launched a new app that attempts to help you stay fit through the power of social networks ? and peer pressure. Called The Promise Keeper, you use the app to schedule when you plan to have your next run. The app will then inform all your friends on Facebook and followers on Twitter about when it will take place. When it comes to the day of your scheduled run, the app will remind you about it. If you choose not to run, the app will tell all your friends about you giving up, which should lead to all sorts of teasing and ridicule from your friends about you. But if you do complete your run the app tells all your friends as well so they can all congratulate you on undertaking steps to stay fit. The only problem with the app is that it’s based on a trust system ? users can mark a run as completed even if they haven’t done it. Probably an update in the future will change things. The other day, a HTC spokesperson was quoted as saying Gingerbread (Android 2.3) would be arriving on the EVO 4G, though an exact date wasn’t given (Q2) and now it looks like the build could be making its way to your phone sooner than later. Some folks have managed to acquire a leaked version of the EVO 4G Gingerbread ROM and have posted it up online for anyone to everybody to download. While it doesn’t have HTC Sense 3.0, it does come with the quick-boot function that is present in the current HTC Sense introduced with the Desire Z and Desire HD last year. While this Gingerbread update probably isn’t the final build that will be released, it does show that HTC actually are working on the update instead of making empty promises.
