PlaySay teaches you a new language over Facebook

I came across this wall post in Facebook the other day from a high school student – “when we go to our rooms, we open up our textbook – we TEXT our friends, and FACEBOOK on our phones.” How apt for the modern generation, and if they’re going to spend so many hours a day on Facebook, why not make sure they reap maximum benefits not from inane postings, but to help them learn a new language? We’re talking about PlaySay, a Facebook app which will take advantage of the social graph so that one can learn a new language.

PlaySay will rely on images to represent the fundamental components of language learning, letting basic language learners actually figure out their own Facebook updates in a new language, word by word – or in this case, with the help of image by image. After all, learning a new language (or anything else basically) with a group of friends is so much more fun than flying solo.

Plastic Logic 100 video

Remember the Plastic Logic 100 that we mentioned earlier this morning, where said e-book reader was announced in Russia? Well, there is a full hands-on video of it floating around on YouTube, taking a good 12 minutes of your time. Everything’s in Russian, so if you do not know the language, just enjoy the dozen minutes worth of video. It has been compared to a smaller Sony e-book reader in the video for size, and it is definitely large enough to be an above average e-book reader. Gotta love how he took some metal piece and knocked the screen all over the place with the sharper end, without it resulting in any noticeable “injury”.

Trust Eldar Murtazin and gang to get all the latest goodies! Check out a video of the Plastic Logic 100 in action after the jump.

Google Flight Search sneak peek

It was back in May when we first heard that Google is capable of searching through flight schedules, and now we bring you a sneak peek of Google Flight Search – where this new travel tool is touted to deliver faster, more flexible, and more useful results for those who perform online travel searches. Basically, it allows you to check out what the Google team has managed to accomplish to date.

From today onwards, whenever you search for flight information on Google, you will be able to view a ?Flights? link in the left-hand panel. Clicking on this link will lead you to the new Flight Search feature, which is an additional “bonus” so to speak apart from the display of flight schedules. Flight Search can be accessed directly at google.com/flights if you’re interested.

T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S2 announced

Samsung loves releasing variants of the same phone for all the different mobile carriers Stateside, and it is T-Mobile’s turn to see what their version of the Samsung Galaxy S2 will come with. Samsung?s Galaxy S Support Twitter account decided to give the game away, confirming previous rumors that this model will run on a Qualcomm processor – a 1.5GHz dual core Qualcomm APQ8060 processor to be exact. Hopefully at that clock speed, it won’t drain the battery life too much.

Windows 8 app store set to open doors

Microsoft knows that it does not hurt to follow a business model of another company if it proved to be successful, and certainly no one would want to dispute the effectiveness of the App Store or iTunes from Apple. Well, the software giant has decided to take a page out of Apple’s book by announcing that there will be a Windows 8 app store, allowing application developers to write programs for the newly announced operating system, letting them sell the result of their hard work on a dedicated Microsoft application store that will open the moment the new OS ships.

Cloud computing after death

Now if there is one thing that our great grandparents need not worry about when they died was whether they had any digital data to pass down to their descendants – these days, with so many of us having our lives inter-twined in the computer world, what will happen to our blogs, websites, and digital information when we pass on? To date, laws in the US as well as other countries have proved to be rather vague where the fate of digital rights to online accounts after death are concerned – which might lead to extremely complicated legal processors amongst the survivors who want to access the online services of the deceased.

Clean energy for storage required

Fossil fuels are still the way to go if the cogs and machinery of the world is to move, but the clean energy movement is slowly but surely catching up and entering the mainstream consciousness of many people – while both wind and solar power have proved to be far cleaner, they cannot be stored somewhere – so the current challenge is to look for a method to stash away excess electricity generated in an efficient and large scale manner.

Quirks & Quarks decided that there is promise in a quartet of energy storage technologies, where one of them is the use of compressed air stored underwater in tethered balloons. Apart from that, there are also more efficient batteries in the pipeline thanks to Linda Nazar, a chemistry professor at the University of Waterloo, where she based her work on lithium sulphur and lithium air chemistry.
