Our friends from Akihabaranews managed to capture a fair number of robots who were roaming the showfloor of CEATEC 2008, and they look way more interesting compared to booth babes. Check out the MANOI robot (above left) that attempts to mimic the way fashion models walk. Does that mean supermodels like Naomi Campbell and Gisele Bündchen will be obsolete? I guess not, unless robot fashion takes off in a huge way. As for the Evolta robot on the upper right, it does nothing but climb perpetually (be it up or down), powered by Panasonic's Evolta batteries (proclaimed to be the longest lasting alkaline battery in the world).

LG's new Scarlet line of LCD TVs has gotten yet another member in the form of the LG80. This is the natural evolution from the LG60 and LG70, so you can expect the next iteration to be the LG90. I digress - the LG80 will feature :-

Hardcore gamers who live and breathe Xbox LIVE will find the XBerry Live application to be just too cool - it was specially designed to track friends on Xbox Live, including their current gamer status and activity. Nice to see the auto-update feature that notifies you in real time, although your other half might be wondering whether you got yourself a new girlfriend behind her back with this application. XBerry Live might be in beta, but it is already compatible with 87xx, 88xx, 81xx, 83xx, & 9000 series BlackBerrys running on OS 4.2.1 and above. You can download XBerry Live over-the-air here.

The printout you see here is one of a few that depict new SKUs in Best Buy's inventory for MacBooks that will roll out tomorrow. Colors were used in lieu of codenames, while dimensions and stock dates are placeholders. Interestingly enough, the prices remained the same as the current lineup. Does this mean there won't be an $800 MacBook?

Just in time for Halloween, this giant spider sculpture was designed for the Liverpool Bienniale by artist, architect, curator, and blogger Ai Weiwei. The network of webs is made out of steel cables, while the spider itself is a crystal studded sculpture with white LEDs strung all along the cables to resemble dew drops on the web whenever the sun is out. Would really be something if preserved human corpses in cocooned containers were placed all over the place for added effect.

Our friends at Switched have managed to get their hands on the new BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220, and here's what they think of it in a nutshell.
If you are a heavy e-mailer and text-messager, but can't bear to carry around an ugly, bulky BlackBerry Curve or 8800 Series (and are too cool to user the very-three-years-ago Pearl), then this phone is for you. Despite its use of the slower EDGE (2.5G) network for data, the BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220 probably the best-performing and most full-featured flip phone out there, essentially delivering all the features of a smart phone (e-mail, browsing, media player, document editing, etc) in a traditional clamshell body. Sure, the iPhone does a lot of that, too (minus the document editing), but not everyone loves a touchscreen. Besides, at $149.99 plus a wide variety of affordable plans from T-Mobile, the Pearl Flip delivers serious bang for the buck for anyone needing a mobile upgrade in these troubled economic times.
Sounds like a pretty good deal at that price, eh?

T-Mobile has just confirmed that they actually exposed confidential data of 30 million customers due to a system error, and part of this data included bank account information. I suppose in times of economic hardship many bank accounts will have very little money left, but that's besides the point. Good thing T-Mobile did introduce a new security system last Friday that closed the security hole immediately, and they assured customers that no data theft had occurred - well, what did you expect them to say? Did this security breach happen just because T-Mobile was too busy preparing for the G1 launch that they neglected other aspects of their business?

Microsoft has announced on the next Windows was going to be called Windows 7. This is not really a surprise, as this was the codename for this 7th version of Windows, but from a branding perspective, it marks a new change - most likely for the better. First, it might be less confusing for "new customers" and secondly, instead of having people saying "XP" or "Vista" they will say "Windows" - This is about "brand dilution". Do you think that this will positive, negative or neither?
Now, Microsoft "just has to" make Vista more exciting. I think that boot time was high on the list, so we will see what Microsoft has to announce tomorrow.

Here's something for the cultured geek - the Chinese Opera Facemask Notebook Cooling Pad.
It features 3 built-in fans, which dissipate heat from the bottom of a notebook computer. It is powered via a retractable USB cable, and is light and portable. The FaceMask is kind of bad-looking, so the geek is now cool, and so is his/her laptop.

Necessity being the mother of all invention, frustrated rangers have managed to come up with an interesting method that alerts them of elephants attempting to "play" on neighboring farms, thanks to a SIM card that is located within the elephant's collar. Using a certain type of geo-fence and Google Earth, this involuntary SMS system will help preserve farms in Kenya before widespread damage is wrought by a playful elephant. One of the major drawbacks would be limited collar battery life and the need for full-time monitoring - can't they come up with a solar-powered version?
