The Little Lamp

Aptly named The Little Lamp, this little lamp is a battery powered miniature LED table lamp, but in this case the battery is the base! Using the classic lamp shade, but in miniature form, even has a fully working pull chain to switch the lamp on and off.The base of the lamp is [...]

Zune 2G - A Whole New Experience

Zunelogo Earlier this year I wrote an in-depth review of the Zune. I touched on the player itself (now known as the Zune 30) and the software in a big 4 part review. I took a while to come out with that review since I feel that initial perceptions for me tend to not be very accurate. And this time will be no different. My personal reviews of the software and hardware will be a while in coming. (And I?ll need to get the new Zune 80 anyway. But that?s a-comin??) In the meantime though, since I have used the Zune quite extensively for a year now, I can at least offer a quickie first impression.

First, let me just say the firmware update is incredible. The first UI on the Zune was awesome. I really thought it blew away anything I?d seen on the market, including the iPod. And while I think the Touch UI is pretty sexy, I still love the style and utility of the twist interface. All Microsoft did for the past year was take one of their best UIs they?ve ever conceived and made it better. It looks great and runs great. It?s clear a lot of time and energy went into every aspect of it.

Which makes me wonder how they EVER found the time to take the substandard Zune desktop software and turn it from a dud into a stud. No, really, I don?t need to use this software for several weeks to say unequivocally that the weakest spot of the Zune experience has been turned into something that?s not just usable but ENJOYABLE. It?s fast, efficient and clean. The addition of Podcasts is sure to please many people and the expansion of the library includes much needed things such as comedy. Doing a search no longer makes trips to the dentist seem less excruciating.

Shocker: iPhone virtual keyboard not as good as
real ones

Shocker: iPhone virtual keyboard not as good as real ones.

A usability consultancy firm called Centric Inc, has determined that the iPhone’s virtual keyboard is more error-prone than its physical counterparts. I have heard “it gets a lot better after a month” a hundred times from iPhone users, but the experiment seems to show that the number of errors while typing on the iPhone doesn’t really go down with experience.

“iPhone owners entered text as rapidly as QWERTY owners on their own phones. However, iPhone owners made significantly more texting errors on their own phone (5.6 errors/message) than both QWERTY owners (2.1 errors/message) and numeric phone owners (2.4 errors/message) on their own phones, p < .01. Interestingly, comparing texting performance between iPhone owners and novices (non-owners) on the iPhone found no significant difference in error rates. "While the iPhone's corrective text feature helps, this data suggests that iPhone users who have owned the device for a month still make about the same number of errors as the day they got it," (more details)

We said in Jan 07 that the keyboard would not perform all that well, but it’s not important enough to stall sales: many iPhone owners don’t type extensively or carry a blackberry in addition to their iPhone.

R2-D2 Trashcan

We know that everyone's favorite astromech is capable of doing plenty of stuff, but somehow being a trashcan sounds very much below its dignity. Fortunately enough, Artoo is extremely humble and doesn't mind holding a whole load of junk with...

Nokia N82 official product photos

Nokia N82 official product photos After a few days of rumors and poor-quality photo circulation, the official images from Nokia are out… The official announcement is tomorrow, but someone at Nokia made a gaffe and posted them early (or may be it’s on purpose, it’s hard to tell these days). Anyhow, a little more buzz won’t harm the N82. The specifications highlights are in the full post. (click photo to zoom)

8GB Asus Eee is coming

8GB Asus Eee is coming

It’s quite a surprise, but Asus is going to release an Eee ultra-mobile PC with a better display, more memory and storage. The good news is that despite the larger display (10” versus 7”) the computer size will be the same. That’s because the original 7” display is surrounded by a rather large frame, which really is a perfect fit for a 10” display. In my opinion, Asus designed it this way from the beginning, realizing that the real limit for a laptop size is the keyboard. How much will it cost? (not an actual photo of the 10” Eee PC)
