Google I/O keynote videos posted online

Google I/O

For those of you not in the US or you just didn’t get the chance to attend the Google I/O event and wished you were there to experience the keynotes first hand, you’re in luck. Google has announced on their blog that the complete keynote on both days is now streaming on YouTube. Granted it’s not the same as being there (plus you don’t get the free Galaxy Tab 10.1), but it’s better than nothing. Over 30 announcements were made during the keynotes, and online coverage would have probably missed out some points here and there. Not to mention, you’ll get to watch the technology being demonstrated in video ? something that still photographs can’t recreate.

Maybe in the future, keynotes will be rendered in 3D and streamed on YouTube 3D to give a more immersive experience. Head here to check out all the video footage from Google I/O this week, or hit the break to watch the 1st and 2nd keynote. Grab some popcorn, it’s going to be awhile.

AT&T rumored to launch LTE network in June

AT&T Tower

If rumors hold true, it looks like we’ll have one more LTE carrier to join the scene at the end of next month. According to the folks at IntoMobile, a trusted source has advised them that AT&T’s LTE network will be launching in June. Apparently the first city AT&T’s LTE network will roll out to will be New York, with the earliest date being June 30th.

Then the following month, on July 24th we should see the network reaching Los Angeles. No other details have been mentioned, so take these rumors with a pinch of salt. And like Verizon’s 4G LTE network when it first launched ? don’t expect phones to support the network arriving straightaway. AT&T will introduce their network through USB modems and hotspots, before they break out the phones. We can’t wait.

Now, more rumors have sprouted saying that Amazon will be releasing more than just a tablet ? apparently they’ll be releasing a whole family of Android devices including a smartphone as well.

The rumors started with a tip from an Android and Me source who is supposedly an industry insider with direct knowledge of the project. Apparently it has also been verified by other anonymous sources as well.

Apple files patent for text-speech/speech-text
features on the iPhone

Apple Patent

According to another Apple patent recently discovered, the Cupertino company seems to have filed for a system that can convert speech to text or text to speech for the iPhone. Uses for this system would allow conversations to go on when it’s too noisy or when silence is required. For example, in a noisy setting, the speech to text function will be used and will convert incoming speech into text that can be read by the user, eliminating the need for either party to yell “What?! Can you speak a little louder?” into the receiver.

For text to speech, if a person is in a meeting or a lecture and can’t excuse him/herself to use the phone, he or she could type a text which would then be converted into speech for the other end to listen to. The system also allows speech to text to occur on both ends at the same time, which can lead to iPhone users being able to save chat logs that are easily archived and searchable (like speech to text voicemail). What other uses can you think of for text to speech and vice versa?

Only 27% of Americans are interested in buying
the Wii 2

Nintendo WiiIGN recently reported about a national survey of 1,508 gamers where they asked about how interested they were in purchasing Nintendo’s upcoming Wii 2 (also known as Stream or Project Café) based on what they know about the console so far. For the purposes of the study, a gamer was defined as someone who spent at least an hour a week playing games and at least an hour a week on the internet.

Judging from the results, it doesn’t look too promising. Only 27% of the folks surveyed said they were interested in buying it, 28% said they wouldn’t and 45% were undecided. I guess not enough information has been revealed to make consumers want to buy the console, so we’ll probably have to wait until E3 when people know more about the console to make a more informed judgement.

What else do you think the Wii 2 needs in order to capture the hearts of the American audience? Features? Game lineup? Drop us a comment with your thoughts.

MobileMe no longer on sale at Amazon.com:
replacement on its way

MobileMeEarlier this year, Amazon stopped selling Apple’s MobileMe software in their retail outlets but continued selling it on their online store. Now it’s been reported that Amazon no longer offers MobileMe from their online store, completely getting rid of it from all their sales channels.

This is a big deal because Amazon was known for putting MobileMe up for sale with heavy discounts, making it one of the preferred stores to buy it from. Now the only place to get MobileMe is directly from Apple itself. While Apple still sells it now, it might only be a matter of time before they stop ? with all the rumors of iCloud.com being Apple’s next cloud service, MobileMe clearly looks like it’s about to be replaced.

With the WWDC coming up soon, expect an announcement from Apple regarding MobileMe or its replacement.

Dropbox isnt as safe as you thought

Dropbox

It has been reported that Dropbox, one of the most popular cloud storage options available, has been charged with an FTC complaint. Apparently the promises of keeping your files encrypted and secure on their servers are a lie, according to Christopher Soghoian, the security researcher who brought up the issue.

According to the complaint, Dropbox has the ability to access and view all the files uploaded to the service despite claiming that they weren’t able to see the files you uploaded without a password. This meant that users were at the risk of government searches, rogue Dropbox employees and even companies trying to bring mass copyright-infringement suits.

Blogger is back

Blogger logoAfter over 20 hours of downtime, Blogger, Google’s popular blogging service is now back up. Earlier today (yesterday for some of you folks), Blogger was taken offline due to reports of bloggers and readers not being able to access blogs or publish posts. Google traced the source of the problem back to their scheduled maintenance that they had on Wednesday night ? something went wrong and data got corrupted, which then affected Blogger’s behavior.

Yesterday Google returned the site to pre-maintenance state and put the service in a read-only mode, so people couldn’t submit new posts. They rolled back to an earlier version of Blogger (Wednesday May 11th) and now they are working to restore the posts that were published since then. No word on when the restoration process will be completed, but you should be able to blog by this weekend. How many of you were affected by this downtime?
