Internet TV heads for Cars Now

Internet TV heads for Cars Now

Just when you thought the car was safe from the long tentacles of TV, USTelematics throws a spanner in the works by delivering IPTV to its Voyager in-car entertainment systems, allowing drivers and passengers alike to continue their couch potato habits while stuck in rush-hour traffic jam. In addition, USTelematics will offer a "mobilecast" program known as 4VDO which will deliver both broadcast and video programming. I suppose with moves like these, it is only a matter of time before fast food companies begin to offer delivery services for those in a gridlock. Guess this means we won't be able to escape from ads while driving, eh?

AT&T 3G Network FTW!

AT&T 3G Network FTW!

Tests have shown that AT&T's 3G network has pummeled both Verizon and Sprint's competing networks, according to ComputerWorld.

To gauge the speed and reliability of these three wireless data networks, I used my ThinkPad X300 to collect nearly 500 data points at eight different places in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, within a 50-mile radius of midtown Manhattan's urban canyons. I timed how long it took to establish a connection with each network, followed by speed tests. Using Alken's bandwidth meter, I was able to gauge download and upload speeds as well as how long it took to load that vendor's home page. Finally, I ran an Internet radio station and timed how long it took to drain the battery. I then compared it to running the battery down using the notebook's Wi-Fi radio. All speed readings -- connection time, the Alken speed tests and page loading times -- were repeated five times and averaged.

AT&T has consistently faster download and upload speeds in addition to shorter connection and page load times. I guess this bodes well for the 3G iPhone's release, and will definitely put a smile on Steve Jobs' face.

m-Jays Earpiece for iPhone

m-Jays Earpiece for iPhone

Jays from Sweden has rolled out its m-Jays Music Adapter that was developed specifically for the Apple iPhone. This 3.5mm mini-plug works just right with the iPhone's recessed headphone port at one end, while virtually all standard headphones with a similar jack can be used on the other. Both are gold-plated to conduct sound better, but make sure your MP3 file is of a high quality bitrate or else that would be pretty much useless anyways. Features include a built-in microphone and a call answering button. Unfortunately, there is no wireless connectivity here so make sure you don't strangle yourself with the 35" long cord. Each $77 bundle consists of the j-Jays stereo headphones and an adapter.

Ericsson, Dell hook up on HSPA

Ericsson, Dell hook up on HSPA

Ericsson and Dell will be working together to make sure globe trotters can remain connected on Dell's next-generation laptops, thanks to support for seamless roaming via tri-band HSPA mobile broadband networks. Dell laptops with integrated HSPA mobile broadband modules from Ericsson will be available sometime in the second half of this year. I wonder how much of a premium one must fork out for this, but it is interesting to note that as the world gets ever closer together in terms of people being able to travel virtually anywhere these days, they tend to be further apart due to such technology that keeps them isolated. Ever seen a family reunion where kids play with their own DS Lites while teens remain zoned out on iPods, leaving only the grandparents to stare at one another?

MSI Wind Priced for US Market

MSI Wind Priced for US Market

MSI has released its pricing details for the Wind ultra portable laptop. As it will be going up against the Eee PC 900 12G (Linux) model, MSI has shrewdly placed a $399 price tag on their Wind model that runs on Novell SUSE Linux and has 512MB RAM and an infinitely more spacious 80GB hard drive. For folks who prefer 1GB RAM and Windows XP, they will have to fork out an additional $150, which brings the final price to $549, breaking the psychologically important $500 barrier when it comes to impulse purchases. The MSI Wind will be out this June 3rd. Which camp are you on?

Sega Dreamcast goes Portable

Sega Dreamcast goes Portable

The Sega Dreamcast is one of the more memorable, although ill-fated consoles to be released. Although it had a pretty short lifespan, the legacy is upheld by legions of fans worldwide, and one of them has gone so far as to pack in the entire Dreamcast into one portable format, crammed into a plastic jewelry box instead. This means it comes with a 5" LCD display and a portable power supply - although the extent of its portability is still limited by just how long your power cord is.

Details on Guitar Hero IV

Details on Guitar Hero IV

There are more details filtering out for Guitar Hero IV, and this time round Activision's hot selling franchise will follow Rock Band more closely by offering a slew of new instruments such as a bass, microphone and six-piece drumset which is accompanied by two cymbals. There is no word on whether both Guitar Hero IV and Rock Band instruments will be cross-compatible, but kudos to the developers if they make it so. After all, not doing so will only lead folks to take sides, which is not exactly a good thing. At press time, you can expect tracks from Van Halen, The Eagles, Sublime, and Linkin Park to make the grade. Guitar Hero IV will hit the Xbox 360, Wii and PS3 before the year is over.
