Samsung Develops Blue Phase Technology

Samsung holds the honor for developing the first "Blue Phase" LCD panel in the world, and this new panel claims to offer more natural moving images with an unprecedented image-driving speed of 240 Hertz (Hz). For folks who are interested in seeing just how this new LCD panel will look like and the impact on images it will have, they can always pony over to Samsung is planning to the SID (Society for Information Display) 2008 International Symposium, Seminar and Exhibition, which will be held in Los Angeles from May 18 to 23 and check out the 15" model.

The final product should be affordable since it was developed with an extremely cost-efficient design, doing away with the need for liquid crystal alignment layers unlike today's LCD modes. The Blue Phase mode is able to create its own alignment layers, hence reducing the number of required fabrication processes to reduce production costs significantly. It is also able to hit a superior response rate of 240Hz without having to have an overdrive circuit. Mass production of Blue Phase LCDs will begin in 2011 onwards, so there is no need to hold off your LCD TV purchases till then.

Don't you just love it when the old meets the new? Case in point - Daniel Soltis's Moving Parts project which is a "two-player hybrid physical/video pinball game that uses variations in game rules to elicit different social interactions between players." Digital pinball on a wooden table? I'm all game. This is no ordinary pinball game, however, as you will be able to pit your reflexes against an opponent at the other end of the table in "competitive" mode by trying to sink his ball, while the two of you can actually work together in a co-ip mode while trying to keep the balls in play as long as possible. I like the way the entire hybrid form factor has been done - excellent job, Daniel! The only thing missing now would be a slot for quarters.

Gizmondo To Launch After All

The Gizmondo must surely be one of the most problematic handheld consoles ever to be made, missing their original May launch date only to provide everyone with a late 2008 launch instead. I suppose the extra time has something to do with the introduction of improvements such as a separate graphics card from NVidia as well as Windows CE 6.0 as the operating system of choice. Despite seemingly superior hardware, I think the entire console will just tank when released - this should go the way of the Phantom as it would be better for everyone.

Visionware has released its powered HDMI cord known as Hi-Wirez HDMI cable. This cable claims to minimize signal, and boasts the following :-

It has a proprietary silicone core technology enhancing fidelity between source and display. Each connector has a patent pending embedded data chip that ensures lossless video and audio data transfer (video from 480i to1080p and higher) limiting distortion and pixilation. An ultra-slim industrial design for applications that need to fit connectors very close together and a CE rating for in-wall installations and applications. Most importantly, the cable is powered (from either end), allowing for a much thinner and lightweight design that can run over much longer distances than other analog HDMI cables.

Sounds good in theory, but as most people will tell you, $369 for 5m of cable doesn't make much sense at all. Unless you're an oil tycoon, that is. I'll pass on this.
