Memorex enters digital audio player fray

Memorex enters digital audio player frayMemorex has just taken the jump into the DAP market by introducing the MMP8640 device that offers pretty much what other generic models already do, including both MP3 and MPEG 4 media playback in addition to support for WMA-DRM protected files. Unfortunately, the 1.8" color display is much more suitable for just audio listening than watching videos since your eyes will probably end up worse for the wear after an hour or so. Other features include a miniSD memory card slot and an integrated FM radio. Battery life is rated at 20 hours, but take that figure with a pinch of salt since manufacturers tend to run everything at the minimal level which is just not practical for everyday use to get superior results. Each purchase comes with a protective sleeve.

Garmin unveils new walkie-talkies

Garmin unveils new walkie-talkiesGarmin has just launched a couple more walkie-talkies in the form of the Rino 520HCx and 530HCx. Both models come with an integrated GPS chipset and more than enough maps to help you reach your destination without ending up in Atlantis. As with all newer products, the two Rinos feature faster processors and a microSD memory card slot for expansion options. Don't worry about sunshine or rain since both models are waterproof. The 520HCx and 530HCx retails for $450 and $500 respectively when released this June, with the latter having the advantage of a weather receiver, a compass, and an altimeter.

Freestyle Audio a hardy MP3 player

Freestyle Audio a hardy MP3 player

Most electronics as we know it are extremely sensitive - a simple fall to the ground results in two sounds, that of the screen and your heart shattering into a million pieces upon impact. The Freestyle Audio MP3 player is much tougher than that, featuring shock-resistant parts to keep it going even after many an accidental drop. Unfortunately, the features seem to have remained in flash-based memory players from the early part of this century with a mere 512MB of internal memory, taking much glamor and shine off its waterproof and buoyant features. With a recommended retail price of $199.95, that's virtually daylight robbery - shockproof or not.

House, heal thyself

House, heal thyselfFancy a house that is capable of resisting earthquakes by monitoring seismic vibrations and sealing cracks in its walls by itself? This is made possible by nano polymer particles used to construct the wall, specifically designed to convert into liquid when under pressure, flowing into cracks, and subsequently solidifying itself. The walls itself are a combination of novel load bearing steel frames and high strength gypsum board, with wireless, battery-les sensors and radio frequency identity tags within to collect data regarding the building over time. The house will be constructed in Greece by 2010 to the tune of $18.6 million dollars. I wonder up to which part of the Ricther scale can this house hold on to before collapsing.

Nike updates line of iPod gear

Nike updates line of iPod gearNike seems dead serious in their partnership with Apple, updating their line of iPod gear in the form of the Nike + iSkin Running T-Shirt, providing you with a space on your shirt to carry your iPod as you pound the pavement during those cool mornings. A mixture of polyester, nylon, and elasticine enables moisture to evaporate as quickly as possible, leaving you dry much faster than a normal cotton shirt. The waterproof sleeve offers a place for you to tuck in your iPod without sacrificing ease-of-use that the iPod is famous for. You'll have to dig deep to pick up the Nike + iSkin Running T-Shirt though, as the men and women's clothing retail for $120 and $115 respectively.

di-GPS records history

di-GPS records historySome of us like to label our photographs by including the location, date, and exact time we took those photos. Unfortunately, our memory isn't exactly reliable all the time, which is why the di-GPS device offers shutterbugs the advantage of providing real time position and the precise time to your digital camera, recording these locations to each digital image file the moment you snap a photo. This $300 dongle comes with an integrated backup battery and an internal antenna. Too bad the di-GPS works with Nikon DSLR cameras and the Fujifilm S5 Pro only at this moment.

Paper shredder results reversible

Paper shredder results reversibleTo the average human, reversing the effects of a paper shredder is nigh impossible, let alone reconstructing the information shredded. Researchers in Germany are optimistic as they have successfully developed a software program which is capable of undoing the effects of paper shredding. The pieces of torn documents are scanned on both sides, where the capture digital images are then analyzed by a cluster of 16 computers for 25 features, ranging from color, shape, texture, handwriting, and typeface. Looks like offices had better purchase furnaces in lieu of shredders from now on. Fine ash, now that's permanently irreversible.

Super Trackstick keeps tabs on target

Super Trackstick keeps tabs on targetThe Super Trackstick looks set to be a winner when it comes to tracking devices, since a pair of AAA batteries are capable of holding out up to a couple of months before requiring a replacement. Measuring a mere 4.5" x 1.25" x 0.75", the Super Trackstick is small enough to fit into any vehicle without arousing any suspicions. 4MB of internal memory is more than enough to store up to 2 months' of data, and this data can subsequently be downloaded to a computer via USB and reviewed over Google Earth. Juicy details concerning routes traveled and times spent in different locations will be able to help you build a case against a cheating spouse in court. Another great aspect to the Super Trackstick is the non-existent monthly fees.

KTF drops information on 2 new handsets

KTF drops information on 2 new handsets

KTF of Korea has just announced that the company will be unveiling both the EV-W200 and EV-K200 cellphones in Korea pretty soon. The EV-W200 is clearly the superior handset between the two, featuring a 2 megapixel camera, an integrated MP3 player, video phone capability, an electronic dictionary, and Bluetooth connectivity while the EV-K200 sports slightly diminished features with its 1.3 megapixel camera, MP3 playback, a Collins English dictionary (!), and Bluetooth capability. The odds of these making their way to North America ranks between nil and negative.
