American Airlines to provide Samsung Galaxy Tab
10.1 as in-flight entertainment

American Airlines logoWhile we have most airlines opting to use the iPad as in-flight entertainment, we have one airline that has chosen not to succumb to the trend, by offering a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 instead. American Airlines has just announced a deal with Samsung that will place its 10.1″ tablet into the hands of passengers who are flying Premium Class on the airline.

The tablets will be customized for the airline’s in-flight entertainment needs, including the addition of expanded memory because the tablet won’t be streaming anything from the cloud ? despite you flying above the clouds in the plane.

This is great for Samsung, as users will get to experience the tablet firsthand and increased exposure for the tablet means a larger potential market. Of course, they’ll have to customize the UI enough so that users won’t have a hard time using the tablet, if not they will be turned off by the device, doing the opposite of what Samsung hopes it would.

G.Skill Sniper 1866 MHz DDR3 Memory Kit

RAM is one of the basic building blocks of a computer system, and although the technology has changed over the years the same basic idea of quick temporary storage has been RAM's main purpose since its inception. Gamers have always wanted the fastest speeds possible but unfortunately that meant that many of the fastest kits were very expensive. Since the introduction of DDR3 prices have plummeted and speeds have skyrocketed and a good set of 2 x 4GB RAM can be had for under $150. G.Skill understands this and has SKU's designed for every price range. G.Skill's most recent addition is its Sniper series of which we will be looking at the 1866 MHz F3-14900CL9D-8GBSR kit which is well priced $104.99 providing users above average speeds with relatively tight 9-10-9-28 timings. Benchmark Reviews will determine if this RAM is worth its price or if users are better off getting slower, less expensive SKU's.

Skype coming to Comcast TV

Skype logoWhile Skype hasn’t been extremely reliable in recent months, it’s still one of the most popular VoIP services around and it certainly is very active when it comes to expanding onto every platform out there. From PCs to smartphones, to tablets, Skype can be accessed from pretty much any device available. One of the latest devices to get Skype have been smart TVs, and now it looks like it’ll be arriving on regular TVs as well.

According to a report from the Huffington Post, Comcast will be announcing tomorrow its plans to bring Skype calls to TV sets later this year. Subscribers will rent a kit from Comcast that will have a webcam and an adapter that plugs into the TV. Users will also get a remote that has a keyboard on the back to typing text. Subscribers will get notifications on their TVs and have the option of answering calls full-screen or in a window while watching TV.

No prices have been made known yet, but it needs to be reasonable if Comcast wants to compete against smart TVs or Blu-ray players that have Skype and are already available on the market.

Apple Sued By iCloud Communications

Apple recently demonstrated its cloud-based service: iCloud at the WWDC. While the demo was well-received and praised, the company soon found itself facing a lawsuit over the name of this new service. A VoIP service and hardware provider named iCloud Communications, LLC, has filed a lawsuit against Apple for using its name without prior permission, though it cannot be explained why the company took about 5 days to file the lawsuit. To add to Apple’s woes, iCloud Communications has released … Read Full Article

Verizon Wireless and Payfone to launch new
payment system

Verizon Wireless logoVerizon Wireless and Payfone have just announced that they will be working together to bring a new mobile payment system to Verizon Wireless customers. Though details are scarce at the moment, they mentioned that the service will allow Verizon Wireless customers to make online purchases from their smartphones, tablets and PCs through numerous payment methods, including charging purchases to their monthly wireless statements or using traditional payment methods through financial institution partners.

Other than the vague press release, no more information about the upcoming service was revealed, but it looks like it’s going to be another e-wallet service that could possibly incorporate technology like NFC to make mobile payment more efficient and convenient for Verizon Wireless customers. It sure looks like mobile device payment services are beginning to catch on. Stay tuned for more information.

Samsung Chromebook bill of materials costs $322

Samsung Chromebook componentsIf you’ve wondered about the profit that Samsung makes for selling each one of their Chromebooks, you have to wonder no more. According to the folks over at iSuppli, who gave the Samsung 3G Chromebook a tear down, it costs $322 to obtain the parts to make one of these Chrome OS-powered notebooks, while it retails for only $499. That’s not a very large profit margin for Samsung, when compared to the XOOM or iPad that costs only $278 and $235 respectively that sell for more than the Chromebook. And we haven’t even included the costs involved used to pay for other factors such as workmanship and marketing of the device.

The Chromebook is made from a $86.37 motherboard, a $58 display, a $48.20 battery, and a wireless $42.85 chip. All the parts are soldered onto the board as well, which means this won’t be a notebook that you’ll be updating on your own.

Do you think that knowing how much it costs to build the Chromebook and how much Samsung makes will help convince consumers to pick up the device? I guess we’ll have to see how many units of Chromebooks are shifted in order to see how much Samsung will make.
