Stardock Systems is back, with an all new incarnation of their space based turn-based strategy classic, Galactic Civilizations II: Dread Lords. The Geeks have spent the last month putting this new version through its paces to see how it stacks up against its forbearers and the competition. For those unfamiliar with Stardock and the Galactic Civilizations franchize, a bit of history is due here. GalCiv (as it is commonly referred to) started out in the mid 1990?s as one of the top games for IBM?s OS/2 Operating System. The game was well received as a fun, encompassing game, with extremely powerful AI opponents that did not cheat (unlike the AI found in similar games such as Sid Meier?s Civilization series.) In the 2001-2002 timeframe Stardock released an updated version for the Windows platform with improved graphics, but much the same game play as the original (Brad Wardell, head of Stardock once mentioned that it took the Windows platform that long to catch up to the multithreaded capabilities of OS/2 and the AI system in GalCiv is heavily multithreaded.) GalCiv 2: Dread Lords continues the franchise, incorporating all the things that made the original game work, while adding several interesting features.

The Asus VX1 notebook has the Lamborghini marque on it, but does the performance live up to its 4-wheeled counterpart? Even with a Core Duo 2GHz T2500 processor, Intel's 945PM chipset and the 3945ABG 802.11a/b/g WiFi adaptor, 1GB of 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM, a 120GB hard drive, a dual-layer DVD±R/RW optical unit, a 15" (1400 x 1500 resolution) screen, the Nvidia GeForce Go 7400 256MB graphics card, the £1,945 price slapped on it does not justify the parts within. Expect the VX1 to ship at the end of this month.

TDK plans to develop a Blu-ray disc that offers a whopping 200GB of storage space. That is equivalent to triple of what the average home computer/notebook hard drive size is. Should TDK achieve their target, this new Blu-ray disc will offer 4 times the capacity of the current largest BDs. We reckon this monumental ambition will be achieved soon, as TDK had already unveiled a 100GB prototype last May that contained a quartet of storage layers and supports a write speed of up to 216Mbps.

Looks like the free WiFi plan for San Francisco has hit a snag, with an increase of laptop thefts in the city. Internet cafes in San Francisco registered an increase of 30 robbery cases in 2005 when compared to 18 cases in 2004. Most of these thefts were non-violent with the exception on one man being stabbed in the chest when he refused to part with his laptop. Internet cafes and coffeehouses have already taken the pro-active approach of implementing various security measures around their premises, including cable locks on tables and door guards.

They say good things come to those who wait, and this is certainly true for those who cannot wait to get their hands on an Intel Core Duo Apple machine. As you can tell by the roadmap, the 28th of May will see a reduction in prices for Intel Core Duo chips, with even speedier chips in the works, such as the 2.33GHz T2700. Upcoming Metrom processors that were produced via the 65 nanometer process technology will feature 4MB of cache, 64-bit and virtualisation support, and 800MHz buses on the low voltage versions.

The Russian-designed Flashbag USB drive offers an unorthodox method of knowing how much free space you have left. A built-in micro pump will inflate the device as the USB drive begins to fill up. When full, an error message "There is not enough free space." will be displayed, and the Flashbag will be bloated at its maximum capacity. Even when unplugged, the Flashbag will not deflate, so you will always have a visual reminder of how much space there is left. The only grouse would be USB ports that are situated too close to each other. You definitely can't fit the Flashbag between two other USB connections when full.
