LG Revolution spotted at the FCC again

Is second time the charm? Perhaps, as we did see the LG Revolution go through the nuances of the FCC in March this year, only for radio silence to continue – until today, that is. Also known as the VS910, the LG Revolution has just edged closer to a release date courtesy of its Class II Permissive Change Notice that appeared on the FCC. What does that mean in plain English, you ask? Well, the Change Notice would mean that the LG Revolution that was approved of in March earlier this year will not see action Stateside. Don’t feel deflated though, as there has been a revised version of the Revolution which made its way through the FCC today, and that model will be the one that will nestle against the palm of your hand in due time.

Seagate Launches Slimmest Ever External HDD

Storage capacity and the physical size of storage media have always shared an inverse relation. As the drives gradually shrunk over time, storage capacity has increased nonetheless. Seagate has given its GoFlex range of portable external drives the same treatment with the new GoFlex Slim drive. The Slim GoFlex variant packs in 320GB storage capacity in a 2.5-inch form factor that’s slimmed down to 9mm, which is 38% thinner than the previous GoFlex range. You essentially get the same form Read Full Article

Logitech K750 wireless solar-powered keyboard
innards checked out by the FCC

Boy, do we sometimes wish that we could spend more time rummaging through the FCC’s archives and arcane site, as it holds a treasure trove of information. Take for instance, this super green computer peripheral known as the Logitech K750 wireless solar-powered keyboard – and imagine being able to play with it so much, that ripping off the cover of the device (in a dignified manner, of course) is something that is part and parcel of everyday work. Boasting of two solar panels, the Logitech K750 wireless keyboard will rely on those to ensure it remains juiced up and ready for action all the time, and best of all is, even the standard florescent office lights will do if you aren’t sitting anywhere near a window.

Facebook login approvals help beef up security

Remember how Symantec sounded the clarion call for users to beef up their Facebook passwords by changing it frequently, touting that it might just prevent your account from being hacked or hijacked? Well, Facebook did not turn a deaf ear to such threats, and has recently rolled out a new security feature that intends to protect against malware and chat hijackings. The site will be able to challenge attempts to access your account from an unrecognized device, relying on a setting known as login approvals.

Once this setting is activated (oh, why can’t Facebook just do it on our behalf just like how they sneakily reset our privacy settings in the past with a new rollout?), Facebook will send a text message to your handset alongside an access code which you are required to input before the signing on process is completed.

E FUN Nextbook Next6 Android-powered tablet

E FUN has started to ship its Next6 Android-powered tablet to the masses, giving you yet another option in what seems to be an oversaturated market already. Never mind, with Android Ice Cream Sandwich coming our way, you can be sure that the ghost of Android fragmentation can be laid to rest, since Google intends to bind everyone up on the tablet and smartphone divide under one solitary operating system version. That’s still in the future though, and we intend to concentrate on the present with this 7″ capacitive touchscreen tablet device. Features of the Next6 include Wi-Fi connectivity, an e-reader, eBook Store app and the SlideME application manager.

Touted to be the next generation of books that can be carried around anywhere without causing your shoulder to experience unwanted strain, we do wonder just which segment of the population is the Next6 targeting more – the studious kind, or those who prefer to use it as a portable multimedia device of sorts? After all, a Wi-Fi connection would come in handy for you to listen to your favorite tunes via online radio, or stream YouTube videos as you like it.

Google Chromebooks might not be so secure after
all

The recently announced Google Chromebooks might have gotten the world to sit up and take notice (especially when Angry Birds is made available for it over the Web!), and depending on which group you are on, there is a very different reason for doing so. Casual consumer electronics users will see it as a new toy, but security experts are much darker in their assessment – touting that a cloud-based OS might just create gaping security holes, and that alone would result in your data being vulnerable to a cyber attack. Now no one would want that to befall them, would they?

Manufactured by Samsung and Acer, the Chromebooks are rather limited in terms of hardware, using just 2GB RAM and 16GB of SSD storage, while running on the Chrome OS, a consumer operating system that relies on cloud technology, making it the first of its kind in the world to do so.

Thunderbolt iMacs from Apple sees restriction in
hard drive upgrades

Apple has laid the smackdown on those who want to perform third party hard drive upgrades in their Thunderbolt iMac line, virtually making it impossible to replace the main 3.5″ hard drive on the iMac unless you decide to go through Apple. In an analysis by Other World Computing (who incidentally, is a company that makes a living off selling hard drives and other upgrades for Apple?s Mac range), Apple has settled on a proprietary cable and a proprietary temperature and fan control system, so if replaced manually on your own, that would result in a hardware test failure.

The two main “culprits” here? A proprietary 7-pin connector which will replace the industry-standard 4-pin connector, as the extra pins are there to connect a proprietary sensor, which incidentally is the second component in Apple-branded hard drives to the logic board.

Your graphics card could be a gateway for
Internet threats

Researchers from Context Information Security have issued a warning that the WebGL standard might be doing its job well from a graphical perspective, but there is a dark side to it – it might just undermine the security concept that is practised by current operating system versions, opening up new avenues for external attacks over the Internet. For starters, in order to enable rendering of demanding 3D animations, WebGL will give permission to web sites to execute shader code directly on a system’s graphics card. Anyone with malicious intent and a high level of technical know-how will be able to exploit this and take down an entire system just like that.
