TDK introduced its GBDisk RS1 series of Serial ATA (SATA)-compatible industrial silicon disks which are able to hold up to 16GB worth of data on its single level cell (SLC) NAND flash memory which comes in handy for high-speed and frequent data writing. Features such as complete power interruption tolerance, error correction, distributed data writing, and bad block management make this one highly reliable memory storage solution. They share the same dimensions as a 2.5" hard drive, and should be able to find their way into tiny UMPCs sometime in the near future. Hopefully the prices will be low when it debuts for the consumer market.

Engineering students at Carnegie Mellon University have developed the HandTalk, an interactive communication glove which are able to translate finger and hand gestures into spoken words. I guess this is pretty much a language translator, giving those who know zilch about sign language a chance to know what the deaf/hard of hearing are trying to communicate. The first version has a 32 word limited vocabulary, but that is better than nothing. Hopefully more research can be made and turn this into a fully fledged communications tool for the masses in the near future.

If you plan to include some solar panels on your roof but dread the thought of getting some renovations done, perhaps Lumeta's PowerPly is the right answer to that dilemma. Installing these are a snap as you won't even need to remove a single tile from your roof, as the panels come with standard roofing adhesives which does away with the need for drilling holes and using bolts. Unfortunately, these solar panels are available for commercial projects only at the moment, and let's keep our fingers crossed that residential use of these will be approved pretty soon. Life's getting expensive these days, no doubt about it, so anything to help save on my monthly power bills will definitely be welcome. Oh yeah, and to leave a green legacy behind, too.

Mention Apple these days and most people will think of the 3G iPhone. Hopefully this (welcome) distraction won't make people miss the fact that the MacBook Pro range has just received a quiet update, with the inclusion of multi-touch trackpads and higher end models getting a processing speed bump. You can choose from a 15" Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz processor up to a 17" Core 2 Duo 2.6GHz processor, depending on your taste, along with a 300GB ATA 4200 rpm hard drive if your budget permits. Drooling for an upgrade already?

After watching "Click", I would've loved getting hold of that magical remote control but seeing the consequences definitely makes me think twice. This Universal Remote concept by David Chacon does not have any magical properties attached to it, but it is delicious to look at, with a rather generous screen facing you for you to take full control of virtually every compatible electrical appliance in your home. I suppose if various companies can come to an agreement with each other, they will be able to offer custom graphic user interfaces for different devices that will take full advantage of the touch screen display. Somebody make one like this already - in the mean time those of us grounded in reality can always settle for one of Logitech's universal remotes.

What better way to enjoy summer than sip a cool beverage by the pool with a good book in hand? Of course, you will need to find some shaded relief as you do that, and the VEIL Solar Shades certainly fit the bill. This concept for Australian primary school yards involves solar panels that not only provide the necessary shade against sunburn, but has a solar panel on to to harvest the abundant solar energy in order to reduce costs. Each of these shades will feature broad, uni-directional panels surface which can be rotated accordingly to obtain the optimal position when facing the sun - too bad that still has to be done manually. Why can't street lamps of today do the same?

Looks like LED lightbulbs will be here to stay, with Faiz Rahman, a nanoelectronics researcher at the University of Glasgow, handing out that prediction. Apparently LED light bulbs for homes could debut on store shelves within the next 2 to 3 years, jostling with incandescent and fluorescent bulbs for the customer's ever worthless dollar. I suppose the shift is inevitable considering LED bulbs offering up to 70% more efficiency compared to incandescent (5%) and fluorescent (25%) bulbs. One thing LED bulbs will have to overcome at the moment would be the lowering the manufacturing cost which is sky high at the moment in comparison.

So what if RIM has released the BlackBerry Bold 9000 - Apple isn't going to give up its phenomenal success in the smartphone market just like that. A new iPhone Black has just appeared on AT&T's website when you select the type of phone you have, and this option is listed right after the standard iPhone. Dare you say it - this is the long awaited 3G iPhone?
