Amazon.com has just announced that they will begin selling a slightly cheaper version of the Wi-Fi only Kindle that will include special offers (aka advertisements) and sponsored screensavers. The new version which goes on sale May 3, 2011 will cost $114. The regular, non-ad version is $139. I can see the trade-off of paying less [...]

HTC Flyer to land in Europe this May 9th

We suppose that this piece of news sneaked us by, what with all the spotlight being shone on the announcement of the HTC Sensation 4G earlier this morning. Word has it that the HTC Flyer tablet device is set to arrive in Europe this coming May 9th, and the 16GB model still does not come with any official price tag, but we do know that the 3G-enabled model that has 32GB of internal memory has been caught with a £599 price point on several different sites to date. Just in case you were wondering, the smaller capacity HTC Flyer has no 3G connectivity, jsut Wi-Fi support. There is no word on when HTC will be preparing the Flyer to arrive Stateside, but it might take some time after Europe, although it is widely believed that that will happen a month or two ahead of when Sprint introduced the HTC EVO View 4G when summer rolls around.

Office for Mac 2011 Service Pack 1 from Microsoft
released

True to their word, Microsoft has rolled out Office for Mac 2011 Service Pack 1, where it allows iPhone and iPad users to synchronize all their notes, contacts and tasks with Outlook without any hassle whatsoever. Those who own Office for Mac 2011 will be able to download Service Pack 1, where the download weighs in at 246MB, and you will need to make sure your machine runs on Mac OS X 10.5.8 or later. Of course, with each new service pack, you can be sure that the software gets more secure (although the Mac platform by default is way more secure than the PC environment), where vulnerabilities which existed in Office 2011 such as that which enables an attacker can use to overwrite the contents of your computer’s memory with malicious code is closed up. Apple intends to discontinue using Mac OS X Sync Services with its subscription MobileMe service on May 5 for all users, just for your information.

Lifebook X2 concept looks sizzling

Ah, here is yet another conceptual device that looks like it can be the talk of town for some time to come – for starters, it is extremely portable by being super slim, while getting folded thanks to a quartet of its hinged segments. If you opt to open the Lifebook X2 halfway, then it would resemble that of an ultra widescreen display palm-based device. When you choose to unfold it completely, you get a full sized netbook. Of course, that means you will find a seam that runs right across the LCD display, which can be quite the turn off if you want to spend plenty of hours in front of it. Then again, for something of such a size, you would probably use it for casual surfing and not hardcore work, so that should work out just fine – assuming someone decides to roll it off the production line, of course.

Microsoft StreetSide to rival Google StreetView

Sometimes, you need not come up with something original to command the attention of the world, you can just improve on what is already there by making it far better, similar to making the wheel better instead of reinventing it. Microsoft has taken a piece of advice with that adage, where they will be introducing the Microsoft StreetSide, which will rival Google’s StreetView – starting work on Europe this time around. So far, cars that have been fitted with cameras have already started to go around London, snapping photos, and will continue to map major cities throughout Europe from May onwards. This service has already debuted in in 56 US towns and cities, and Microsoft intends to learn from the mistakes of Google by avoiding piracy concerns as they go about gathering Wi-Fi data. Microsoft is adamant that they will not record all streets, but will only concentrate on urban centers where people want to look for services.

Elitegroup ElitePad S10 arrives at the FCC

Anything that is set to be released in the US will first need to jump through some hoops over at the FCC, and the ElitePad S10 from Elitegroup of Taiwan is no exception, either. This Windows 7-powered tablet has arrived at the FCC, indicating a very possible US launch, where it will come with a 10.1? capacitive touchscreen display at 1366 x 768 resolution, powered by an Intel Atom Z760 1.5GHz processor, 1GB RAM, a 1.3-megapixel camera, HDMI out, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 3.0 connectivity with a Solid State Disk as its internal storage medium of choice. It is interesting to note that the S10 is a mere 13mm thin, making it easy to slip into your tote bag without causing any noticeable bulge. The device itself has less than 6 hours of juice, so that is definitely a huge minus point in our books. We would say that a good benchmark for tablet devices would be its battery life – anything that can last a trans-Atlantic flight while playing a movie the entire journey gets a thumbs up from us.

USB to HD Adapter from IOGEAR

IOGEAR has announced their new USB to HD Adapter (otherwise known as GUC2025H if model numbers are your thing), where it was specially designed to connect additional HD displays to a desktop or laptop over USB 2.0. Of course, we would have liked to see USB 3.0 thrown into the mix to keep up with the times, but since USB 2.0 is on just about every computer, it makes much more economical sense to sell something that caters to the masses. Relying on the increased bandwidth of HDMI and DisplayLink technology, IOGEAR can now deliver audio and video support on a single peripheral, which is a huge leap forward compared to internal video cards or external adapters/cards (VGA/DVI) which are able to support video alone. Basically, with the USB to HD Adapter, those who use laptops can have up to three displays at their eyes’ disposal – the laptop screen itself, a secondary display through the integrated VGA port and a third from the USB port. This would help me increase my productivity for sure, as it supports a resolution range of 1600×1200 and 1920×1080 in 32-bit color – handy when one is filtering through thousands of news stories and press releases each day. At $99.95 a pop, this is worth checking out. [Press Release]
