Amazon to deliver digital book library

Amazon certainly has a new tablet up their sleeves, but it is still surrounded by a shroud of secrecy. Well, the company is said to be working on a digital book library that will be not too different from that of what Netflix is offering with their e-book subscription service. I guess this bit of news would definitely make Amazon Prime subscribers happy, since that means they have an easier time getting the digital tomes of their choice downloaded.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Amazon is currently talking to book publishers concerning subscription access to a library of e-books. Of course, there are plenty of issues to be ironed out with such a concept, as publishers too want to take care of their own interests, and understand that the latest titles may be excluded, similar to how Netflix’s streaming service works.

Supercomputer is the new crystal ball, predicts
revolution

In the distant future, do you think you will be able to see gypsy women peer into a computer monitor instead of a crystal ball so that they can chart the future? That seems to be the direction where we’re heading, as it seems as though a supercomputer is capable of predicting the Arab Spring revolutions – according to sentiment mining that displayed a sharp change in tone around Egypt right before President Mubarak was unceremoniously ousted.

Of course, this would involving feeding a supercomputer with news stories that might eventually help the supercomputer predict major world events – at least that is what US researchers have stumbled upon in a study that involved millions of articles, resulting in a prediction that national sentiment will deteriorate prior to the recent revolutions that we read about concerning Libya and Egypt.

DIY 3D printer with robotic UV laser

Stereoscopic 3D TVs seem to be the next frontier that manufacturers want to push into our living rooms, but what about 3D printers? An affordable version for the average consumer is still far from reality, so necessity being the mother of all invention has led to ‘Rob Hopeless’ cobble together this DIY 3D printer – complete with a robotic UV laser, of course, to make it look all the more professional.

This hack is actually a stereolithography rig, which is a kind of 3D printing which will cure solid parts of a liquid resin. You can check out the YouTube video of it in action after the jump, but before that, a little bit of explanation on how it works is in order.

Stereolithography will fire an UV laser into a vat of liquid plastic resin, where said laser is able to cure the resin into a solid, while the computer program helps guide the path of the laser in a manner that helps it shape a solid 3D object out of the liquid. This is still a work in progress, and a perfected version should be heading your way in due time.

Vodafone: iPhone 5 will arrive in 16GB, 32GB
flavors

According to Vodafone, the much anticipated Apple iPhone 5 will set to arrive in a couple of capacities to suit your needs (mostly budget, I believe) – where they will sing to the tune of 16GB and 32GB. The UK carrier’s product listing on their website also held implications that you can choose from black and white colors, alongside the familiar 16GB and 32GB capacities that iPhone users have been used to for some time now.

According to the product page for the Vodafone Sure Signal, which is a device that functions as a signal booster for the carrier’s network, they will be rolling out a bunch of phones that are compatible with the device, among them a quartet of “iPhone 5″ models. Could that be a typo, and are we getting ahead of ourselves? I suppose a typo should be out of the question, since there was also mention of the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G.

Guess the 64GB iPhone 5 remains a unicorn at the moment, although one can always hope to see that change sometime down the road. What do you think?

Carol Bartz quits as director of Yahoo Board

carol bartzDays after news of Yahoo! reorganizing the top tier of its management which effectively “fired” former Chief Executive Officer Carol Bartz unceremoniously, whether she liked it or not, Carol decided to live out the adage that hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, and resigned from the board in order to get a clean break from the Internet giant.

After stepping down as a director a couple of days ago in a rather unceremonious manner, Bartz did share some of her viewpoints on the situation in a Fortune magazine interview, where she verbally sniped at her fellow directors, calling them ?doofuses? while claiming that they ?f—ed me over.?

Windows Phone Mango coming out next week

If you happen to be looking out at the digital horizon, waiting for Windows Phone Mango to arrive, then you would be pleased to hear that there are whispers of said operating system update arriving sometime next week. Who was the source of this tidbit? Well, hails from the Windows Phone Dev Podcast, who claimed that ?various sources? already informed them that the Windows Phone Mango update is ready to rock and roll next week – accompanied by the relevant developer tools, of course.

Next week is still very vague compared to an exact date, so HTC Arrive owners can rejoice, knowing that after waiting for quite some time already, what is another week? In addition, it certainly jives with previous rumors that Windows Phone Mango is set to arrive in September. If proved correct though, then surely you can expect to see the floodgates open for Windows Phone Mango smartphones to hit the market. This would just give you more options if you are looking for a smartphone.

Sony Tablet S hits the US via HSN

The Home Shopping Network decided to go ahead to sell the Tablet S from Sony, which is a 16GB Wi-Fi model that will retail for $599 a pop, which is a Benjamin more expensive compared to what you would pay over at Sony’s web store. The reason behind this? I suppose it is because you need not wait in this ‘instant’ generation who wants things NOW – considering how Sony still lists their Tablet S under the “Pre-order” section. Early adopters always had to pay an expensive price, and we aren’t talking just about money but sometimes, you might end up with a dud.

TouchDroid project dead, long live TouchPad
Android port

I must say that this piece of news is rather disappointing – in fact, I was pretty much looking forward to it, but to heard that the TouchDroid project is dead? Time to move on in life, I guess. Good thing that the disbanding of the project team does not mean that a TouchPad Android port will no longer be reality, as the CyanogenMod’s team has taken over where it left off.

In fact, the whole thing was somewhat a mess – one of the main reasons why the TouchDroid project failed to continue was because of accusations of code theft by the CyanogenMod team, who were also working on a similar idea. When the TouchDroid team posted a video that displayed a Touchpad run a touch-enabled install of Android 2.3, the CyanogenMod team stepped forward and accused TouchDroid team members of stealing code from the CyanogenMod port.

Samsung Nexus Prime specs leak

Samsung’s Galaxy S II might be the South Korean conglomerate’s latest triumph in the world of Android-powered smartphones, but it is just a pause before they roll out the next big thing, of course. Google’s own smartphones (which has been outsourced to others to manufacture) have always been pretty high end to begin with, and one good thing about those is this – you get the latest operating system version always. Well, the rumored upcoming Google phone is the Samsung Nexus Prime, where it might also be known as the GT-I9250 if you are a sucker for model numbers.

Who would have thought that a social networking site might eventually grow to cross paths with a search engine, as what we see going on between Google and Facebook? Google has since released their own social network, and both Google and Facebook are working on offering music features to their respective services. Facebook Music is said to roll out scrobbling and track unification features. Whoa – back up a minute there, you say. “Scrobbling”?
