Xperia Play games not selling, Sony Ericsson not
worried

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play

While the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play (PlayStation Phone for those of you still in the dark) has yet to hit our shores, the Android handset has already been released in other parts of the world. But a quick check on the PSOne classic games being sold on the Android Market tells us that the games aren’t doing very well. None of the games on sale have yet to hit a thousand copies. However, Sony Ericsson isn’t worried.

According to Dominic Neil-Dwyer of Sony Ericsson, “We know there?s a lot more to come that we?re not, obviously, releasing yet. We?re releasing as we go, rather than telling everyone the full story.” He emphasizes that it’s a brand new platform that’s still in development. It’s also worth noting that the Xperia Play is also the first of many PlayStation-certified devices, with others on the way. With only 5 titles at launch, Sony really is off to a slow start, but it hasn’t been too long since the Xperia Play was launched. Let’s see what other tricks they have up their sleeves.

Soundstage helps army recruits prepare for the
battlefield

Soundstage

When new recruits join the army, most of them have no idea what they’re getting themselves into, having no experience of the war beforehand. And when they first set foot on the battlefield, they are often overwhelmed by all the sights and sounds. Mostly due to the sheer volume of the explosions, gunfire, jets zooming around and so on.

Well, the folks over at the Missouri University of Science and Technology have managed to build a soundstage in a warehouse that accurately replicates the sound of a battlefield. Using this soundstage, fresh soldiers can run through a simulation that exposes them to how loud a real battlefield can be and hopefully prepares them for the real thing.

The stage consists of 64 speakers that can be directed to aim sounds at a specific three-dimensional location, 4 subwoofers round up the low end of things. All sorts of sounds are simulated ? helicopters, gunfire, bombs, tanks, and so on. Although the room is capable of going louder, they place the max level at 100 decibels just to conform to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration guidelines. I wonder what it would be like to watch a movie with a set up of that magnitude.

Android movie rentals will make use of Flash

Flash AndroidAs we all know, Google Android movie rentals were launched yesterday, but people were wondering what format the movies would be distributed in. Well, the answer ? if it wasn’t obvious enough is Adobe Flash. Despite Google introducing HTML5 videos for YouTube last year and introducing the open source WebM media format earlier this year ? Google won’t be pushing out its own movie service in those formats. Instead, Google will be sticking with Adobe Flash and H.264 ? what old YouTube has been using all along.

HTC Merge arriving tomorrow

HTC Merge

The folks over at Droid-Life have apparently received confirmation that the elusive HTC Merge phone will finally be making its debut on Verizon’s network tomorrow. The phone that was leaked late last year, officially announced earlier this year, paid a trip to the FCC and then leaked again in official press shots last month never had a definite release date. Well until today, that is. If reports turn out to be true, Verizon’s latest Android global phone will finally rear its head for sale tomorrow.

The slide-out QWERTY keyboard-toting phone features an 800MHz processor, a 3.8″ display, Android 2.2, a 5megapixel rear camera, 3G global phone capabilities, WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS. No word on pricing, but it shouldn’t go above the $200 mark. With so many other exciting phones already out or arriving on Verizon, it doesn’t look so hot anymore, compared to when it was first leaked. Anybody still keen on rocking one of these global phones?

Google shows off new Google TV at I/O

Google TVAt the Google I/O event, Google gave the attendees a sneak peak of the next version of Google TV and boy does it look good. Based on Honeycomb, the new Google TV will support a lot of new features not present in the current version: a brand new user interface, widgets, notifications and of course ? the Android Market where users can download new apps or rent movies and purchase music. Developers will also have access to the Google TV emulator, a new SDK and the ability to test their apps on Google TV devices. With the new version of Honeycomb enabling USB support and hardware 3D acceleration, it looks like Google TV might even be prepped to run games in the future.

The new Google TV should be arriving late this summer. Hopefully the new features in addition to the content from the Android Market will give the set top box the boost it needs to bounce back onto its feet. Stay tuned for more details.

Twitter updates mobile website

Twitter mobile websiteIn an attempt to bring a unified Twitter experience across its official mobile client and mobile website, Twitter has updated the mobile website for touchscreen devices. It now looks like the default Twitter app, featuring a tool bar on the top for checking tweets, direct messages, searching and your profile. This version of Twitter makes use of HTML5 and other web technologies to recreate the Twitter app experience. With functions such as pull and release to refresh included, there’s going to be no more reason for users to download the official client anymore (unless you really need the push notifications from Twitter).

The new mobile site is now rolling out for a small percentage of iPhone, iPod Touch and Android users, and will continue throughout the next few weeks. If you’re one of the lucky people to get the new mobile Twitter, let us know what you think. Head over to Twitter.com on your phone to check it out.

Only 20% of Google employees are on Windows

Google logoThere have been rumors floating around about Google banning Windows in its office ? and it turns out that the rumors are true ? to a certain extent. Sergey Brin, co-founder of Google has been reported saying that only 20% of Google’s employees are still using Microsoft Windows, and all of them are on Windows 7. The rest of the people have made the transition to Google’s Chrome OS.

Google had previously announced plans to phase out the usage of Windows in the company in an effort to boost security. Careful not to diss Windows, Brin was quoted as saying, “I don’t think there’s anything inherently wrong with Windows. It has a lot of great security features. But I think this [Chrome OS] software-hardware model…that eliminates complexity ? that’s what we’re in the process of deploying throughout the company.”

While it’s true that Chrome OS is a secure operating system, it is also worth knowing that Windows is constantly under attack due to its popularity ? far more people run Windows than any other operating system in the world.
