OpenGL 4.0 catches up with DirectX11

OpenGL 4.0 catches up with DirectX11

With OpenGL 4.0, non-Windows platforms will finally have access to all the features of DirectX 11 (DX11) hardware. Tessellation is now available (it's the star feature of DX11) for game programmers, but there's also an integration of general purpose computing that is better than in DirectX 11.

General purpose computing lets developer use the massive computing capabilities of GPUs for tasks that are not graphic (physics is a good example). DX11 has Direct Compute, which is an API for performing such non-graphic tasks, but Direct compute is really aimed at game developers. OpenCL, the computing equivalent of OpenGL, has a less specific approach and is seen as being more flexible by many. Finally, today's advances in OpenGL 4.0 will eventually find its way to OpenGL ES, the mobile version. More info at opengl.org

Smartbook concept should be realized

Smartbook concept should be realized

This Smartbook does not describe a kind of consumer electronics device, but is a conceptual portable computer instead, where this smartphone can be flipped open to reveal a QWERTY keyboard which can be synchronized with its personalized PC tablet. Definitely something that we would like to see in the real world, but we guess it will remain nothing but a pipe dream at the moment. Since this is but a concept, we guess you can basically imagine it comes with the most drool-worthy of hardware specifications, but it will most probably run on the Android OS considering the Chrome browser is on display here.

T-Mobile webConnect Rocket USB modem

T-Mobile webConnect Rocket USB modem

T-Mobile's webConnect Rocket USB modem seems to be right on the money where its release date is concerned, although it would be extremely advisable to be in Philadelphia if you want to enjoy HSPA+ speeds. March 14 looks like a solid release date, where this $99 device with a two-year contract will cost you $50 for 5GB or $20 for 200MB per month, complete with a $0.20 per MB overage charge. So far, initial impressions have been rather favorable, with one achieving consistent download speeds that range from 1780Kbps to 2797Kbps.
