Golden-i hits the CES showfloor

[CES 2012] The Golden-i was paraded as a concept in the past, and it is now making waves on the CES showfloor. This can only mean one thing – it is now shipping, and will hold the distinction of being the world’s first hands-free mobile, head-worn computing experience which will allow you to orchestrate multiple devices, courtesy of cloud computing, so that businesses are able to improve safety, productivity, and efficiency of their workforce by a significant margin. Tipping the scales at a mere 6 ounces, the Golden-i will feature Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity, and functions as a head-mounted computer (to make you look cool) as it projects a 15″ virtual PC display for your eyeball, while your ears are treated to a speaker nearby. This monocular display system can be adjusted to see action below either the left or right eye, and it does not matter if you are a friend of a pair of spectacles, the Golden-i will work just fine.

Natural speech recognition and six-axis gesture sensing are used to manipulate the Golden-i, delivering a hands-free experience for spontaneous access to virtually any information in the world, and on-demand, of course.

Mophie juice pack powerstation

[CES 2012] Mophie has come to the rescue for many a thirsty gadget in the past, and they are doing to yet again with the Mophie juice pack powerstation. This is a powerful 4000mAh external battery which is said to be able to charge just about any device that can be powered via a USB connector, and this would include the iPad and its sequel, of course. Retailing for $79.95 a pop, the powerstation is Mophie’s most powerful battery yet, and has a charging output of up to 2.1 amps. It can also switch between a 500 mAh, 1 A and 2.1 A charge. The special high-output battery works differently from others in the market since it charges 4 times faster than traditional USB batteries, while improved conversion efficiency translates to more power to your device. Measuring a mere 2.28″ x 4.09″ x 0.53″, the Mophie juice pack powerstation should be on the top of the shopping list for frequent travelers. Check out more action shots of this device in the extended post. (more…)

KIA IVI concept at CES 2012

[CES 2012] KIA welcomes innovation in their vehicles, and their newer models certainly reflect a forward-looking design. Good technology needs to be incorporated as well, and the IVI concept that you see above (and in the picture gallery after the jump) stands for In Vehicle Infotainment concept, sporting a 10.1″ display that is located on top of the dashboard, while there is a brother to keep it company – a 11.6″ widescreen located within the console area. The vehicle of choice here is the KIA Naimo EV crossover, where the IVI concept intends to hook up to devices such as smartphones and tablets, delivering a full connection to various apps and services such as social networks, news feeds and other interesting websites.

Augmented reality navigation is also thrown into the mix, and there is a driver state monitoring system to make sure you are alerted just in case you start to doze off. Night vision mode is also included in order to increase the safety levels when you drive around in pitch black darkness. Last but not least, a HMI (human-machine interface) haptic steering wheel switch is there to help you manage both displays – the learning curve seems to be rather steep compared to a standard vehicle of today, but only time will tell if the IVI concept can take off or not. RoadRover Android system

[CES 2012] The automotive segment of CES does deliver its fair share of interesting stuff to look at, and the RoadRover Android-powered dashboard is certainly something that caught our eye. So far, we do know that the company caters to different vehicle makes and models already such as the Audi A3, Nissan Altima, Peugeot 407/408, Toyota Tundra, Chevrolet Captiva, Ford Fiesta and KIA Sportage among others. The RoadRover system basically allows you to synchronize your data among Android-powered devices such as smartphones and tablets, not to mention opening up the world of running thousands of apps from the Android Market right in the comfort of your vehicle. Of course, we do not recommend playing Angry Birds while you are driving, but to be able to access your Facebook status updates as well as tweets in the car itself is a novel idea, although it is definitely not a killer function to begin with.

External USB camera support is also thrown into the mix, letting you take snapshots of your journey in real-time and uploading them to Facebook or a link to Twitter right there and then – again, with a connected smartphone you can already do that, making RoadRover’s attempt to be more of an add-on than main meal. I guess the only reason to get this would be for its navigation capabilities – anything else on top of that is a bonus. (more…)

Sharp Aquos Board eyes-on

[CES 2012] When we were at Sharp’s press conference a couple of days ago, we saw the Sharp Aquos Board that was paraded but for a moment. Meant to be a digital whiteboard for the office (or just for anyone who wants to get their life organized), this unique board has a built-in computer that provides the relevant processing power to have it accept doodles as you can see above, while boasting a video conference ability to boot that lets you run Skype on this in addition to other similar VoIP-based software. There is still no price tag attached to the Sharp Aquos when we were at the booth on the CES showfloor, so stay tuned just in case an announcement crops up sometime down the road. Check out more images of the Sharp Aquos Board right after the jump. (more…)

Sony says no to PS4 announcement

There were rumors in July last year as well as December that a Sony PS4 could be in the pipeline, being prepared for an announcement at E3 later this June, but there was always this nagging feeling that it is not meant to be. After all, the PlayStation 3 is just halfway through its lifespan, and it would not make sense to sink so much more money into the development of a new console when the current “horse” has yet to run the full course. The Wall Street Journal is also very certain that Sony will not be making any announcements of the PS4 at E3 2012. Sony’s Kaz Hirai has this to say, “I’ve always said a 10-year life cycle for PS3, and there is no reason to go away from that.”

If history were to be repeated, Sony might just pull a surprise on the video games market with a PS4 before the PS3 is well and truly past its 10 year old mark. After all, that is what the Japanese corporate giant did with the PS3, announcing and launching it before the PS2′s 10-year anniversary was up, and that did not deter or see sales of the PS2 drop (although there are also many factors that contributed to that, so that is a different story for another day).

Bang & Olufsen BeoSound 5 digital music system

[CES 2012] Bang & Olufsen’s BeoSound 5 digital music system will be able to deliver two-way functionality with its new remote control known as the Beo6, letting customers navigate one’s entire music collection straight from the display of the Beo6 remote control. We have a video of the BeoSound 5 system in action alongside the Beo6 remote control that you can view right after the jump, but before that, here is more information on the BeoSound 5 before you judge whether it should be a new fixture in your living room. When connected in a Bang & Olufsen link system, the BeoSound 5 will allow you to walk throughout the home while accessing your music in rooms with just a connected speaker, thanks to the Beo6 remote control. Apartments and regular sized homes would more than welcome this new system for music lovers, that’s for sure. You will need deep pockets though, as the BeoSound 5 digital music system with patented playlist technology will sap $6,500 from your bank account. (more…)
