Navy does the underwater Roomba now

Anyone remember the Tintin comics by Herge, where Captain Haddock, the foul-mouthed, rum loving seaman tends to shout, “Blistering barnacles!” at different moments in the comics? Well, barnacles in real life might seem to be rather innocuous when you first lay your eyes on them, spotting them on the undersides of breaching whales, but when they make their homes on the underside of a ship, a significant amount of drag is created so much so that a vessel’s speed might be reduced by up to 10% – not to mention increasing fuel consumption by up to 40%. I can just imagine future weapons of the US Navy include “barnacle bombs” to slow down enemy vessels and make them more fuel hungry.

Yet another 23 Android-powered mega-tablet

Remember the 23″ multi-touchscreen display that was developed by Martin Drashkov which we covered recently? Well, it has certainly sparked off the interest of Peter Kaptein, who decided to develop his very own version. This is one piece of gadget homage that remains true to the spirit of the original as it retains a similar screen size, although this project relies on a single touch resistive 23″ touchscreen displace with an Difrnce DIT7000 Android tablet that was purchased for 135 Euros after an ?everything must go? sales discount. Too bad there was no way to crank out higher resolutions of at least 1,200 x 800 pixels, although HDMI output resolution of this tablet still stands at a rather respectable 800 x 600 pixels. Not exactly something that will set the world alight, but it is still an interesting experiment for DIY lovers. See a video of it in action after the jump.

Star Wars Yamaha 2.1 surround sound system

Can’t get enough of Star Wars and you feel that you’re the space opera’s number 1 fan on the globe? Well, it would bode you well to check out this Star Wars themed Yamana 200-watt 2.1 surround sound system which was carefully and painstakingly painted by Nub Graffix from the hit reality TV show American Choppers. I woud say that this is more or less an instant classic, where the TIE Fighters come with Yamaha 2.75″ mid-range and 1″ dome tweeters with built-in cross overs.

Heads up Blackberry users in the Europe, Middle East and Africa, it looks like RIM is facing some technical issues which might be able to explain why you are having issues accessing certain features on your phones. This seems to have been confirmed by a variety of carriers in those particular regions, such as T-Mobile UK, Vodafone Egypt and Batelco in Bahrain.

A solar energy plant generates power through the
night

When you think solar power, you probably think that it?s only good for use in the day, and generally this is true especially when it comes to things like solar powered chargers for phones or laptops and etc. Not content with just its use for the day, a solar energy power plant in Spain not only uses the power of the sun to keep it working in the day, but manages to keep it going all through the night as well.

Verizon announces Samsung Stratosphere

Ah, the rather elusive Samsung Stratosphere. I guess we’re something like journalists for National Geographic in our efforts to hunt down the latest and greatest news, save for the fact that we’re dealing with the world of tech instead of animals and wildlife. Well, we’ve already seen the leaked specifications for the Samsung Stratosphere, not to mention having its manual sneak out as well, so what better way to commemorate the smartphone than to announce the Samsung Stratosphere officially from Verizon Wireless now?

Steve Jobs stash holds 4 years of gold ahead

To say that Steve Jobs is a visionary is an understatement, and is the least of verbs we could use in his eulogy. Glad to know the ‘visionary’ bit of the late Mr. Jobs has been elevated to cult status for the umpteenth time with word that he has planned out another four years of new products that is said to propel the company forward and perhaps to a certain extent, safeguard its future. It was further revealed that Jobs did fight pretty hard to get plans approved for a spaceship-style company headquarters in California, where this unique headquarters is said to be able to hold up to a dozen thousand employees in a park-like setting that is located near the current base in Cupertino.

Motorola ET1 rugged tablet

Motorola’s foray into the world of tablets, like so many others, have not exactly yielded the kind of success that Apple has had with their iPad and its sequel, the iPad 2. Still, that does not mean that Motorola is going to quit from the tablet market. Today, Motorola Solutions announced a spanking new 7″ touchscreen rugged tablet that will be powered by Android 2.3 Gingerbread – and since there is no Honeycomb inside, you can be sure that this is not going to be a tablet for the masses but rather, one that is deployed for workers in retail stores and warehouses.
