Smartphones used on floating robots to track
water flow

A group of engineers at the University of California have deployed a fleet of 100 floating robots in the Sacramento River. The goal of the engineers was to demonstrate the next generation of water monitoring technology that promises to transform the way the government monitors its precious Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta that has a network of channels that direct drinking water to two-thirds of California?s population and irrigation water to 3 million acres of agriculture. CITRIS researcher Alexandre Bayen led the Floating Sensor Network project by using a network of mobile sensors that can be deployed rapidly on water to provide real-time, high-resolution data in hard-to-map waterways. Bing New Architecture: Introducing Snapshot and
Social Sidebar

This morning, we were at a press conference at Microsoft offices in San Francisco to see a demo of the revamped Bing search engine. Touted as a ?new approach to search? by Microsoft, the new architecture features a three columns design, dividing the search activity in 3 distinct areas: Core Web Results, Snapshot and Sidebar (see picture in the complete article ? or watch the demo).

On the left, Core Web Results lets the user focus on the traditional topical search and gets the largest portion of the page.

Snapshot, in the middle, delivers additional information related to the ?entities?, in the demo, for the query ?best seafood restaurant in Chicago?, the additional information related to the entity (restaurants in Chicago) is a map of the city with several restaurants and below users can access various filters such as price, ratings and more. Besides restaurants there are other type of entities, according to Microsoft, that do not necessarily return a map as additional information, technology is one of them.

Wi-Fi Blocking Wallpaper Could Improve Wireless

The answer to better Wi-Fi security could lie on the surfaces of a wallpaper. A team of French researchers at Institut Polytechnique de Grenoble was able to develop a wallpaper that can allegedly block Wi-Fi signals. Working together with Centre Technique du Papier, the researchers claim that the wallpaper prevented Wi-Fi signals from being transmitted beyond the confines of an office or apartment. If you will observe the photo above of the said wallpaper, you will notice that it has a triangular snowflake-pattern. The team said that the mesh has filtering capabilities and that it can only block a few set of frequencies used by wireless LANs. (more…)
