We know that Google has released the Android 3.1 Honeycomb update for the Motorola XOOM tablet, and in that particular piece of good news, we covered a slew of improvements and additions made which should make it more bearable to own a Motorola XOOM. Well, for those who have already tried out the new software, they claim that it is noticeably faster compared to Android 3.0 which it shipped with.
That is certainly nice to hear, don’t you think? One of the major reasons for it being faster would be the inclusion of support for hardware graphics acceleration, with some users claiming the entire user interface being faster and more responsive – and we are all for that. After all, who would want a laggy interface that seems to have a stop-start motion especially with plenty of icons on it?

Who would have thought that the iPad could actually come with a couple of USB 2.0 ports? That’s what we were told with an unused iPad design in a patent that shows off Wi-Fi as well as 3G connectivity, alongside an additional USB port for landscape connectivity. The whole idea for this auxiliary USB port would be to allow you to place the iPad in a dedicated landscape dock – not only that, it will also dock in portrait mode and simultaneously synchronize using both USB ports. Interesting, no? More in the extended post to satisfy your curiosity.

Symantec researchers, who spend their entire time waking up (or so it seems) searching for security flaws across the vast spectrum of operating systems, websites and programs, have just issued a statement to the masses, asking them to change their Facebook password even as you are reading this. Yes, apparently they uncovered an old Facebook bug which potentially is able to provide access to millions of user’s photos, profiles and other personal data.

The Kajimoto Laboratory at the University of Electro-Communications is currently researching a brand new technology known as the “Palm Touch Panel”, where it is capable of transmitting tactile information via the screen straight onto the palm of your hand, now how cool is that? Of course, what happens if you are one who suffers from sweaty palms? Well, too bad then, as the more hygienically minded around you might just wear gloves or prefer to use a real touchscreen display instead. Just how does it work? Pixie dust is ruled out here, and an explanation for the ages is available in the extended post.

When it comes to cars, technology has certainly improved by leaps and bounds, letting you change the engine oil at intervals that are far longer than what it used to be. For older vehicles, generally 3 months or 5,000km (whichever comes first) is a rule of thumb, but with synthetic engine oil and better engines, those figures have been skewed. Sometimes, we might feel that it is better to change the engine oil earlier, but it might lead to unnecessary wastage. Lubricheck comes in handy here, where it intends to help drivers money and minimize discarded oil through the analyzing of samples of engine oil while informing drivers whether such engine oil is good to use or not.
Sharing the rough dimensions of a credit card, the Lubricheck will see users place some drops of their car’s oil in the device’s sensor cup. It will then go about measuring the capacitive and resistive properties of that particular sample in order to let you know the oil’s acidity, metal particulate content, carbonized particulate content, and the level of foreign liquids such as coolant or water.

We first caught wind of the HP Pre 3 at the FCC late last month, and since then, nothing much has been heard from HP concerning their newest webOS 3.0 smartphone. Well, slightly more than a fortnight later, here is yet another version of the HP Pre 3 arrivign at the FCC, delivering support for CDMA/EvDO bands 850/1900, GSM bands 850/900/1800/1900, and UMTS bands 900/2100 – now that is definitely not an AT&T-only handset as originally envisioned, making this a far more appealing option to the masses.
This version of the Pre 3 will be called by its model number HSTNH-F30CV, and according to leaks that had circulated around the Internet previously, this particular model looks set to arrive on Verizon Wireless. The wide range of band support would also translate to it being more or less a world phone, so those who are well heeled and tend to travel a lot would be able to use it just about anywhere they are.

Some folks just can’t get enough of Super Mario, the world’s most lovable and recognizable plumber. While some people just end up playing the same old games again, in anticipation of the next one, others decide to take things into their own hands. Like the group behind “Newer Super Mario Bros. Wii”. A bunch of dedicated fans, modders, developers, and homebrew gamers are working on a successor to the original game on the Wii.
Their reasoning behind starting the project is because Nintendo is set to unveil their new console at E3, it’s likely that they won’t be working on pushing out new games for the Wii anymore, especially not such a high-profile game like Super Mario. And so, the team is putting together a game using Nintendo’s original art and designs to make it look as authentic as possible. However, they will be crafting new gameplay mechanics, power-ups and over 100 new levels.

Humans can be quite the predictable creature, and here we are with at least someone out of the 4,999 or so people who attended the Google I/O conference today (we did, and here’s a summary of what went down there) who decided to make a quick buck out of the free Limited Edition Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 that was given by the Internet search giant.
Bear in mind that the white Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 has yet to hit the market, and is in fact scheduled to be launched within a month’s time, powered by Android 3.0 Honeycomb (with an upgrade to 3.1 coming real soon), sporting a dual-core Tegra 2 processor to provide enough muscle for all your tablet needs.

Earlier today at the Google I/O keynote, Google announced that the latest version of Android Honeycomb (3.1) would be officially released for Motorola XOOM tablets today. And sure enough, some people have already started to receive the update.
The new update brings a number of enhancements to Android Honeycomb with the highlight of the update being the movie rental service on the Android Market introduced today. Thousands of movies will be up for rent from the Android Market and can be streamed or downloaded from the web. The movies can then be watched on the computer or on Android devices. Rentals start at $1.99 a movie.
Other enhancements include: the ability to use the USB port for pretty much any USB device, input support from mice, joysticks and gamepads, resizable home screen widgets, and Google Music Beta.
Motorola XOOM is the flagship tablet for Android and the first device to launch with Honeycomb so it’s no surprise that it would be receiving the new update first. Expect updates to other Honeycomb tablets to arrive in the near future.
