Xbox 360 spring update to start rolling out on
May 19

Xbox 360 update

According to the folks at Joystiq, we might be seeing a major update to the Xbox 360 in a couple of weeks. They recently got their hands on a leaked internal document from Microsoft concerning a big update for the Xbox 360. The document puts down the update’s release date from May 19 through May 30. But the update will be rolled out in 6 groups, so it won’t be reaching everybody at the same time.

What does the update bring? Firstly Xbox 360 users will have the ability to use Paypal for their transactions ? to purchase points, content, and subscription for their gaming console. The update will also introduce the Xbox Game Disc Format (XGD3) that allows the console to read the larger disc format that will be adopted for Xbox 360 games later this year. Avatar Kinect is also listed as a feature that will be arriving on May 27 as a separate download.

Granted, nobody is forced to do so, but how many users feel comfortable giving their gaming networks/consoles access to their credit card/Paypal details especially after all the recent mishaps with the PlayStation Network and Sony Online Entertainment servers?

Novel Concepts ThinSink: the worlds thinnest fan
cooled heat sink

ThinSink

Novel Concepts has just announced that they’ve successfully developed the world’s thinnest fan cooled heat sink, dubbed ThinSink. Thinner than a credit card and over 25 times more efficient than today’s best microprocessor heat sinks, the ThinSink is one amazing device. It is also extremely energy efficient, using less power than most regular heat sinks. Developed for notebooks, monitors and tablets, we’re going to see a whole lot more of slimmer gadgets and mobile computers once these babies enter production.

The ThinSink is also extremely quiet due to its design ? its thin smooth fan surface eliminates the pulsating sound and vibration caused by traditional fan blades. And it weighs only 13.8 grams including the motor, and it only occupies 4.5 cubic centimeters of space. With so many advantages to having such a thin heat sink, you must be wondering what its flaws are. Well, it’s not really a flaw per say, but the ThinSink won’t come cheap. With a single piece evaluation unit going for $750 ? that’s like the price of a budget computer for the heat sink alone but Novel Concepts promises that prices will be reduced if ordered in larger quantities. Find out more about the ThinSink.

Google Images now lets you sort by subject

Sort by Subject

As search engines improve and users are starting to search for more than just text or websites, image searching has become a really important part of the search engine. Well, Google has just announced a new feature for its Google Images search ? the ability to sort results by subject. Let’s say you’re searching for an image of a dog, but you don’t really know what dog you’re looking for. So instead of having to look for a site about dogs, and then doing individual searches on each dog type, just go to Google Images and type dogs.

As usual, many different pictures of dogs will appear in the search results, and you still don’t know what you’re looking for. A click on the “sort by subject” link quickly sorts out the images of the dogs according to a subject ? in this case it will be their breeds i.e. german shepard, great dane etc. Now you know exactly what kind of dog you’re looking for and you might even discover or learn about some new dogs in the process. Watch a video demonstration after the break:

Hackers discover zero-day exploits in Google
Chrome browser

Google Chrome hacked

After emerging unhacked from the last three Pwn2Own hacking competitions, Google Chrome, one of the most secure web browsers available today has finally been hacked, according to French security company, Vupen. All the hackers had to do was let Google Chrome visit a website they coded in order for the browser to be exploited. Despite Google Chrome featuring a sandbox that isolates the browser from the rest of the computer (making it hard for hackers to execute code on the PC), the hack seemed to happen effortlessly.

Skype for Mac OS X vulnerability fixed

Skype Mac OS X

If you remember a few days ago, we reported about a bug that was discovered in Skype for Mac OS X? In case you’re not up to speed, a bug was discovered in Skype that allowed users to remotely gain control of another user’s computer just by sending them a specially manipulated attachment in an instant message.

Though there weren’t any reports of hackers taking advantage of the bug, Skype has managed to fix it before anything got out of hand. They’ve just released a new update that patches up the recently discovered problem today, so if you’re a Skype 5 user, it is recommended you update your Skype to version 5.1.0.935 just to make sure you’re safe from such an attack. It’s quite worrying to know that if the hacker had not informed Skype about the issue, there would probably be no patch to fix it today. Hats off to Pure Hacking for making the discovery.
