OnStar API now open up to 3rd-party developers

RelayRides OnStar App[CES 2012] Onstar has just announced that it is opening up its API to third party developers who will be able to imagine and create a new eco-system of apps and services based for the OnStar customer base. OnStar has been monitoring mobile trends very closely, and their conclusion is unambiguous: the company thinks that the number of mobile apps will double by next year, and it is critical to them that they go beyond becoming a successful product to becoming a successful platform. If anything, the RelayRides application, a peer-to-peer car rental service, is a great example of what can be done with the OnStar API.

?With this step we believe we can broaden our portfolio, grow our business and enable our customers to achieve additional functionality from their vehicle using their computer, smartphone, tablet or other devices,? says Linda Marshall, OnStar’s president.

But if you are a developer, don’t expect to access OnStar’s API like you would with Google Maps or Facebook. We are talking about controlling critical functions of a car here, and there won’t be mashups or hackatons – at least for now. Send an email to developers [at] onstar [.com] to apply for access, and OnStar will get back to you. As a user, what kind of applications would you like to see using OnStar?

Cobra Tag G5 loss prevention system

[CES 2012] If you feel the Murphy might strike you sometime in the immediate future, you might want to enlist the help of the Cobra Tag G5 loss prevention system that targets personal valuables, boasting up to half a year of battery life. What makes the Cobra Tag G5 so special? For starters, it will rely on PhoneHalo technology that will alert you whenever you leave (normally) a tiny item such as smartphones, keys or other essentials behind. This small, sleek key fob device will be paired with a free companion smartphone app, “talking” to it via Bluetooth where a separation alarm will link your valuables to your smartphone. The system will constantly monitor the distance between the phone and tagged items, making sure your ears will be greeted by an audible alert whenever the item and the Tag G5 are separated. It will even play nice with the iPhone 4S over Bluetooth v4.0, so you need not worry about purchasing the latest smartphones and not having them play nice. Expect the new Cobra Tag G5 to roll out in Q2 this year for $59.95 each.

Envision Gamecube has no disc drive

If you want something done (your way), then doing it yourself is the best way to go. I know that the Nintendo Gamecube has been reimagined a few times by those with a knack for DIY projects, and ModRetro member Jonathan Shine has decided to turn the Gamecube into a portable version known as the Envision Gamecube. Doing so on your own is no mean task to begin with, but Jonathan decided to up the ante by making sure this puppy does not come with any optical disc drive, preferring instead to rely on an SD memory card slot that is loaded with legal and legitimate backups of games that he already has. After all, you do not want the relevant authorities to come knocking on his door sometime in the middle of the morning and perform a raid while slapping him with an insane fine, do you? Jonathan’s effort, the Envision Gamecube, measures around 1.375″x 6.5″ x 4.125″ and has a battery life of around 2 to 3 hours on a solitary charge. Check out a video of it in action after the jump. iHome IDM5 turns your tablet into a fancy
typewriter

iHome IDM5[CES 2012] iHome has come up with one interesting-looking dock for tablets. Called the IDM5, this keyboard dock does more than just act as a keyboard. The IDM5′s keyboard is on an elevated base which makes typing on the tablet a more ergonomic and (hopefully) productive experience. It also has onboard speakers to amplify the audio from your tablet, and an onboard microphone which you can use to make hands-free calls.

No word on pricing or a release date yet, but this is one interesting looking dock we don’t mind getting our hands on. Plus it does make your tablet look like a fancy typewriter: a plus point for folks who yearn for the good old days before computers overtook the world.

Fujitsu ARROWS ES IS12F waterproof phone

[CES 2012] Fujitsu leads the way in terms of fashionable Android-powered phones that are waterproof – their latest model being the Fujitsu-Toshiba ARROWS ES IS12F, where it will be made available to KDDI au in Japan. Despite being waterproof, you will not be able to tell it with a glance, considering how svelte it is at just 6.7mm thin. After all, waterproof devices tend to be part of the rugged variety, and those are normally not thin at all. What about the system specifications? Fujitsu has packed in the Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread operating system coupled with a snappy 1.4GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8655 processor. A 4″ AMOLED display with 480 × 800 resolution and 100,000:1 contrast ratio will certainly please your eyes, even when you are underwater and need to scroll through your text messages. (more…)

Skylanders Spyros Adventure Starter Pack for
Nintendo Wii

[CES 2012] Gaming is no longer confined to a virtual world, and some might think that Activision has taken a step (or two) back by introducing small figurines in the form of the Skylanders Spyro’s Adventure Starter Pack for Nintendo Wii. We spotted these cute little critters at CES Unveiled, where the storyline was written in such a way where you are the only one who has the potential to protect Skylands and save it forever from an evil tyrant. You will be able to bring your Skylanders to life by placing them on the Portal of Power, where these interactive figures are able to “remember” their in-game experiences and upgrades, and will also play nice with the Skylanders Spyros Adventure video game and on the web.

Definitely sounds promising in theory, but will it be able to work out as intended in real life? I also wonder whether these interactive figures can be placed in other games, and assuming someone levels it up to a certain degree, are those worth something on the third party market? Scalpers might soon make a living off something like this by “farming”, just like the gold rush in World of Warcraft in recent memory.
