PowerSquid by Flexity

I have reviewed many different ways to stuff lots of plugs in one outlet but this product seems to be the answer I'm seeking for my personal mass of plugs. The PowerSquid by Flexity was shown at CES 2006 and...

Venturi Astrolab solar hybrid car

6256_2100672340

Venturi, the same company that brought us the Eclectic wind-powered hybrid car prototype, will be shipping a solar hybrid car in January 2008. Range is about 100km and it can go about 110km per hour (though obviously not for very long). It contains 3.6 square meters of photovoltaic cells with a yield of 21%, and stores the extra in batteries. While it has some of the goofy look and inadequate space associated with electric cars (though it does actually have a second seat, behind the first, like a WWII fighter plane), it would be a natural in Los Angeles, where the sun's always on and the traffic jams likewise. $117,000 USD, which will seem like a better deal as the price of petrol continues going up. CES 2007: Sling switch-reverse it with the
SlingCatcher

slingcatcher-1.jpg
Slingboxes 'sling' TV to your laptop for when you're out and about. The new SlingCatcher does the opposite - 'slinging' content from your computer to your TV - ideal for downloaded films and suchlike. It'll also allow you to view any website on your TV. There's even the functionality to view content on any TV in the house using the Slingcatcher, so you can easily watch a DVD or recorded programmes anywhere.

There is an optional hard disc you can purchase, which is planned to allow you to buy content from Sling Media and store it. No partners have been announced yet, but watch this space. This is all due to launch midway through the year, for about $200.

Digeo Refreshes TV Guide Interface With New Moxi
boxes

After seeing a demo of the upcoming Moxi application and boxes, I have to say that they only thing standing in their way of making a serious dent in the DVR (Tivo) and Media Center markets is their lack of support for Satellite TV services. If you have cable tv, you may have been unknowingly using Moxi already, as Digeo has licensed their product to a number of cable providers and set top box manufacturers. The news here is that later this year, Digeo will be selling these boxes straight to the consumer in retail outlets.

CES 2007: Samsung's Simpsons themed mobile makes
me jones for donuts and Duff beer

simpsons.jpgMany thanks to the fab Stuart Miles from PocketLint, who hopefully won't mind much that we've nicked his photo of this groovy Simpsons mobile from Samsung. Made in time for The Simpsons movie, it's a rather-edible looking yellow, and has an even more delectable pink donut phone charm hanging off it, just to add a further 3.6 seconds of extra fumbling when searching for it in the dirty depths of your handbag. Or, in this case, when juggling 3 of the orignal glazed Krispy Kreme donuts we've been indulging in here at CES. It apparently comes loaded with film content, which we're guessing is perhaps a trailer for the forthcoming movie jizz.

CES 2007: Blu-ray declare a slightly premature
victory

hd-vs-bluray.jpg
It's a real battle of the formats here at CES, with HD-DVD and Blu-ray wrestling / rockpaperscissors / monopoly matches on the hour, every hour to declare the winner here at CES. Well, not quite, but it should happen like that.

Today though, the Blu-ray association released a statement and "declared its victory as the premiere high definition DVD format of choice". Interesting, bearing in mind that more HD-DVD units have been sold than Blu-ray (partly because they were first out there, though).

Blu-ray attribute their 'victory' on the PS3 being able to play their discs, but HD-DVD also have a few things to crow about.

For instance, HD-DVDs are able to play on normal DVD players, so people can start to build up a collection without making the investment of a still expensive player. They're also not doing the expected slacking the content, bearing in mind there's only two of the major studios behind them. There are already 260 HD-DVD movies available, with another 300 being released over the next few months. Blu-ray so far has 170 titles.

It was announced yesterday that HD-DVD players would also all be shipped with ethernet connections, which will allow you to download movie trailers from the internet. Another reason to choose HD-DVD.

But do we need a winner? With LG's announcement that they're shipping players that play both formats, maybe the battle is over before it's really begun.

Check out this video of some Blu-ray Blues Brothers. They've cleverly changed the lyrics from 'soul man' to 'blu-ray man'. Genius.
