Last week, Amazon struck a deal with DC Comics to have 100 graphic novels released exclusively on the Amazon Kindle Fire tablet. As you would’ve guessed, not everybody was too pleased with the idea, chiefly one of Amazon’s biggest rivals: Barnes & Noble. Especially since DC Comics has been reluctant to release any of their graphic novels on B&N’s own tablet in the past.

In some unsurprising news, it has been reported that Sony Pictures has struck a deal with the author of the authorized biography of Steve Jobs (to be released later this month) to obtain the rights to make a movie out of it. The author of the book, Walter Isaacson will be getting paid $3 million if the movie is produced, and is guaranteed $1 million even if it isn’t.
Sony Pictures is the studio behind the recent real-life-stories turned into successful movies such as The Social Network and Moneyball. If Sony Pictures can get Aaron Sorkin (screenplay writer for the aforementioned movies) to work on the Steve Jobs movie, the right cast, and director ? chances are that they’ll have another hit on their hands.
This won’t be the first time that Steve Jobs’ life has been made into the subject of a movie, with the first one being The Pirates of Silicon Valley back in 1999, which was based on him and his biggest rival ? Bill Gates. So much has changed since 1999, and it’ll be interesting to see a more recent portrayal of Steve Jobs on the silver screen.

One of the new features of the iPhone 4S that was announced on Tuesday was its improved antenna that gave the phone HSPA+ speeds ? but not once in the presentation did Apple ever refer to its phone as having 4G, or even labeled it “4G”. While it’s common knowledge by know, especially if you’ve been following our blog, the HSPA+ “4G” that carriers are selling isn’t really 4G and just a marketing term.

Despite the somewhat lackluster reception to the official announcement of the iPhone 4S on Tuesday, it looks like there are a lot of who are interested in picking up the phone for themselves. AT&T has just reported that it’s the carrier’s most successful launch yet. Despite only going up for pre-order this morning, the iPhone 4S has already clocked in over 200,000 preorders ? and it only took 12 hours! Seeing how the iPhone 4 had 600,000 pre-orders on its first day, this is pretty impressive considering that the iPhone 4S is available on 3 carriers (iPhone 4 only had AT&T at launch), and there’s still many more hours before this day is over.
No word on how the other carriers are doing, but if the AT&T launch is a representation of how well the phone is being received, we can expect similar numbers all around. It looks like the iPhone 4S has the potential to upstage its predecessor for number of units sold on launch day. Stay tuned and we’ll keep you posted. How many of you pre-ordered your iPhone 4S today?

On the official HP Palm blog today, it was announced that the webOS App Catalog now has a thousand HP TouchPad-optimized apps available (the app store already has thousands of apps, but they aren’t all developed specifically for the tablet). The thousandth app on the App Catalog? Gun Bros, a free to play 3rd person shooter. And just like the company has been doing over the past few weeks, this week is no exception and HP Palm has a new bunch of promo codes to give out to TouchPad users for free app redemption.

If you use Google Maps in English to look up a foreign country, you might notice that locations on your maps have a large amount of labels ? the location name transliterated and in its native language. While it’s great for learning how places are named in other languages, it resulted in an unnecessary amount of clutter on the map itself. Google has just issued an update that allows you to select which language labels you would like to see. By using just a single language i.e. English, you can halve the number of labels on the map which gives you a less complicated map to navigate with.
As of now, Google has single-language maps for 5 major languages ? Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Russian and English, though you can expect support for more languages to arrive in the future. No word on when it’ll be available on the mobile version of Maps, but it’s a great addition to the already useful service. Check out the feature on Google Maps now.

After the whole Call of Duty XP event, things seem to be pretty quiet on Activision’s side of things, especially with all the Battlefield 3 hype going on (the beta was launched recently). So it was nice to see that Activision has released a brand new trailer for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 today. This time we have a pretty impressive trailer that shows exciting footage of the game’s single player mode.
