Google to Launch Free Music Downloads in China

Google to Launch Free Music Downloads in China

While some search engines in China (including Baidu) are sparring with music majors in the courts, Google is reportedly panning to ink a deal with music industry players and Chinese music site top100.cn to offer free and paid DRM-free music. The files will still have a watermark that will be used to track them.

Wikipedia Offline for iPhone and iPod Touch

Wikipedia Offline for iPhone and iPod Touch

Patick Collison coded an offline Wikipedia app for the iPhone over his Christmas break because he likes ?the warm fuzzy feeling of having the sum of all human knowledge in his pocket?. For the same reason that we do not own an iPhone yet, he wanted to prevent online Wikipedia users to go nuts over the slow EDGE connection.

The app takes 2.2 GB and I am not sure if iPhone users would like to spare the storage space for it. If you do, watch Patrick?s tutorial video on YouTube about the installation.

Batphone

Remember the Batphone from the original Batman TV series (1966 to 1968). It is an answer-only model that starts beeping and blinking when someone calls. To the Batmobile, Robin!

University of Wisconsin Sues Intel for Patent
Infringement

University of Wisconsin Sues Intel for Patent Infringement

The University of Wisconsin believes that the Intel Core Duo processor infringes on a patent that was developed by a professor there. The research on parallel execution of instructions was presented to Intel in 1998 in a proposed licensing deal, but Intel did not choose to license it. The University of Wisconsin believes that Intel is currently using their research in the Core Duo processor and is filing a lawsuit, asking for money and a halt in processors shipment (probably as a way to pressure Intel to give the money).

I’m not a lawyer, but I would be surprised if the University wins: there are many ways to implement a concept and that makes it hard to prove whether or not there was intellectual property theft – if indeed, there was any.

45nm Cell Processor Is Cheaper To Make

45nm Cell Processor Is Cheaper To Make

IBM and Sony have a smaller version (45nm) of Cell, the processor that is used in the PS3. It’s true that it is probably more energy efficient and less hot, but it is most importantly 34% smaller and cheaper to produce. (Not actual photo)

Shrinking chips is part of the normal lifecycle of any computing device. Eventually, Sony will even make a profit on the hardware sales, just like it did on PS2 consoles, after a while. So you’ll be hearing a lot about energy efficiency, but cheaper production costs is the name of the game in that space.
