#Antisec hackers release 10GB of law enforcement
data

#AntisecAfter releasing the details of over 7,000 law enforcement officers last week, it looks like Anonymous is back again, this time with the help of Lulzsec. In their latest Antisec move: the two hacking groups have hacked over 70 law enforcement agencies and stolen 10GB worth of data from their endeavors. As usual, they’ve put the data up for download online.

The leak contains hundreds of compromising email spools, personal information about officers, police training videos, contents of insecure anonymous tip systems, over 300 mail accounts from 56 law enforcement domains, the Missouri Sherriff account dump (7000+ usernames, passwords, home address, phones and SSNs), online police training academy files, Plesk plaintext server passwords, the “report a crime” snitch list compilation and stolen credit card information from the mosherriffs.com online store.

Wow. Talk about a plethora of information. 2011 is starting to look a lot more like the year of the hackers instead of the tablet.

QR codes turn Yiying Lus illustrations into links

Yiying Lu QR code artYiying Lu, the artist behind Twitter’s infamous Fail Whale, was recently chosen to create a collection of fashion illustrations for the inaugural issue of Meets Obsession magazine. And instead of just creating regular artwork with her skills (mind you, she is more capable of illustration than what you probably know her for i.e. the Fail Whale), she’s decided to spice them up a bit by making QR codes as part of the designs.

Each of the ten illustrations she created for the magazine featured a QR code that when scanned with a reader, will lead the user to a website where they can download free digital versions of Yiying Lu’s artwork for their desktop, phones and tablets. Talk about subliminal advertising. What’s great about the illustrations is how the codes are implemented into the artworks, nicely complementing the portraits that Yiying Lu created. Head here to check out high res versions of the artwork.

I previously mentioned that QR codes looked like they were going to make a comeback, and these new illustrations show how creatively they can be implemented. I wonder what other QR-code inspired work we’ll be seeing in the future next time?

Facebook push notifications available on Android
thanks to BlackBerry

Facebook for AndroidAs of now there aren’t any apps available for Android phones (both official and unofficial) that support push notifications for Facebook, but the folks over at Android Central forums have managed to find a work around solution to the problem. A forum member recently discovered that when his daughter switched from her BlackBerry to an Android device, she started getting notifications being pushed to her Android device. Surprised by this strange occurrence, he decided to investigate. It turns out, the answer was very simple.

Coming from a BlackBerry phone, she had Facebook for BlackBerry Smartphones enabled on her Facebook account, and apparently this was the key to why she was getting push notifications on her Android phone. The permissions that Facebook gave to the app somehow unlocked push notifications for the Android app (even if it’s not an option in the official Facebook app).

Here’s what you have to do:

Boingo Wi-Finder for iPhone Review: Finding
Hotspots Everywhere

3G/4G broadband communications for smartphones has significantly reduced the need for Wi-Fi connectivity when you’re away from home or the office. Still, though, there are some solid reasons for using Wi-Fi instead. In trying out Boingo Wi-Finder on my iPhone, I found the app to be really helpful for tracking down wireless hotspots both nearby and far away. The integrated maps and driving directions turned out to be great. However, the  iOS edition of Wi-Finder isn’t as quite as capable as its Android OS, Windows, … Read Full Article

Remote controlled toy truck saves the lives of 6
soldiers

Remote controlled truck

Who would’ve thought that the military would start using remote controlled toys to make their lives safer? Last week a staff sergeant named Christopher Fessenden who was on duty in Afghanistan, was sent a remote controlled toy vehicle that had a camera mounted on it as a present from his brother. When he loaned it to a group of soldiers who used the toy to check the road ahead of them while they were on patrol, it managed to save their lives.

HTC Ruby photographed

HTC RubyLooking for a new T-Mobile Android phone from HTC?  Well it looks like the Taiwanese OEM has got a new Android device up its sleeves, and this one comes under the moniker of the HTC Ruby. The folks over at pocketnow.com have managed to get their hands on a screenshot of the device which looks like a cross between the HTC Sensation and myTouch, which isn’t a surprise seeing how HTC doesn’t stray too far from current designs with its Android phones.

Other than the photograph and the name attached to it, there are no details about the phone but it’s said to be a high-end device headed to T-Mobile and has a possible release date of this quarter. Stay tuned and we’ll keep you posted.
