Microsoft Patch Tuesday is a critical one

The dangers of your computer or device getting hacked is more real each and every single day, no doubt about it. Sony has had its hands full that’s for sure, and Microsoft wants to do everything within their power so that they will not suffer a similar fate in one way or another. In fact, Microsoft intends to issue a couple of bulletins for Patch Tuesday next week, with one of them being “critical” which affects Windows, while the other has an “important” rating for their widely used Office suite.

Among the affected software include Windows Server 2003, Server 2008, Office XP, Office 2003, Office 2007, Office 2004 for Mac and Office 2008 for Mac, at least that is what we know according to the advance notice.

iPad lookalike CM9701 runs on Android instead

Now here’s the ironic part of the CM9701 tablet from Shenzhen Careeror Technology of China – it looks every bit like the famous Apple iPad from the outside, but when you boot it up, you would have realized that something is very, very different. We won’t use the word wrong here since it does not apply (unless you are an Apple fanboy), as the CM9701 is powered by Google’s Android operating system instead – the same OS that sees action on other iPad rivals such as the Samsung Galaxy Tab. The only thing non-Apple about this? There is no Apple logo behind for obvious reasons, but the close resemblance is uncanny to such an extent that the black bar which covers 3G antennas is more or less in the same location as the iPad.

Nokia J headset spotted at stores faucet
department

We are guessing that the world is split into two different groups – one who loves collecting and actually using Bluetooth headsets, while the other absolutely loathes the idea of having something hanging off the ear, preferring to take the risk of picking up a ticket for not using a hands-free kit or device instead while on the road. For the former (and the latter who have been stung with their fair share of fines), there is a new Bluetooth headset from Nokia – the J headset. Heck, it even lives up to its namesake in terms of design, having picked up numerous design awards already such as the red dot Design Winner 2011, iF Product Design Award 2011, and International CES Innovations Design and Engineering Showcase Honor 2011.

LastPass alerts you of suspected master password
breach

Do you agree that we have way too many passwords to remember these days? Yeah, you know, there is the online banking account (woe to you if you deal with more than a couple of accounts), multiple emails for both at work and at home, social networking sites and microblogging tools, the list just goes on and on. One of the biggest mistakes that one can do would be to use the same password for all accounts, and yet trying to remember multiple passwords for different accounts can be quite the headache. LastPass is here to help – it is an online password management provider that will force its users to change their master passwords once it has detected a “traffic anomaly” on one of its database servers.

Sony apologized for PlayStation Network snafu

Sony Chief Executive Officer Howard Stringer has come forward and apologized to users of the PlayStation Network, followed by launching a $1 million identity theft insurance policy for its PlayStation network users. According to Stringer, “I know this has been a frustrating time for all of you. To date, there is no confirmed evidence any credit card or personal information has been misused, and we continue to monitor the situation closely.” Does he want to wait until there is a confirmed case? Saying things like that might just incense the hackers (not the Anonymous group, of course) to come forward and make use of the stolen details as a slap in the face – and that might just happen this weekend.

PlayStation Network: More Attacks Coming This
Week-End (IRC rumors)

PlayStation Network

CNET reports that hackers are preparing for a new wave of attacks against the PlayStation Network as early as this week-end. The information is said to be coming from an IRC user (Internet relay chat). According to the IRC chatter, hackers claim to have present access to Sony’s network, despite the recent effort to plug the security holes.

You can be sure that Sony, and the FBI are preparing themselves to track the hackers, currently suspected of belonging to a group called Anonymous. That said, the Anonymous group denies having anything to do with the matter.

At the moment, it’s hard to tell if the hackers can indeed penetrate the new security that Sony has been beefing up. A security expert has recently told a government panel that Sony’s computer security was lax, or non-existent (firewalls). Sony has not issued a comment on the matter, but things are getting very difficult, and users are getting very frustrated. We’ve seen this in the comments on this site.

Now, Sony is probably scrambling all its computer security team and anxiously wait and monitor network activity…

Apple to focus on the iOS software experience in
the future

Apple logoWhile the iPhone is by no means at the bottom of the barrel when it comes to hardware specs, Apple’s road map of releasing only one phone a year does put them at a bit of a disadvantage when competing against phones from other platforms such as Android, and we all know how fast phones in the Android world turn obsolete.

According to some observations from a Morgan Stanley analyst, Katy Huberty, Apple will focusing less on hardware and shift their center their priorities on software instead. In this case, the iOS operating system. The analyst pointed out that the iPhone 4 will be sticking around longer than usual. It’s almost mid-year and there’s nary a word from Apple about the next iPhone. Previous rumors have pegged the phone for a September launch, others say it will only begin production in September ? but nothing is confirmed for now. And if Apple decides to focus on creating the best software experience instead, they would be on the right track.
