Hulu Plus out to destroy world in Super Bowl ad

Great empires have come and gone – the Assyrian, Babylonian, Persian, Greek, Roman, Mongols, and British, they’re no longer the force that they used to be (with many of them defunct), and since history repeats itself, the world eventually might go down the dangerous path of self destruction – and the tool of choice this time around would be Hulu Plus. After all, aliens are behind the sinister plot to ground our planet to a halt with entertainment, always looking for newer and more sinister methods of transforming human brains into delicious, alien-nourishing mush, and Hulu Plus fits the bill perfectly, as humans are now able to obtain their popular current season TV shows on their favorite devices, at their own convenience. The ?Huluboratory: Extra Mushy Edition? is a 60-second version of its Super Bowl commercial which is guaranteed to help you feel as though you’ve just lost some IQ points. All in the name of fun, and the creative juices behind Super Bowl ads have most of the time been impressive to say the least. [Press Release]

Eye Asteroids debuts, Tobii bullish on prospects

We talked about Tobii’s Eye Asteroids arcade cabinet in November 2011, and while the idea seemed like a novel one, it seems that said arcade cabinet that requires the use of your eyes as a video game controller can be tested out at London’s Trocadero between now and February 17 if you are interested. Just like our previous report, the Eye Asteroids arcade cabinet will not be affordable at all, maintaining its $15,000 price tag which frankly, is more than enough of a capital outlay to purchase the next generation of consoles alongside a fair number of titles, with oodles of cash to spare. No idea on how much fun an Asteroids clone that requires your eyes’ movement to play will be like, but Tobii hopes the novelty factor will pull in the buyers. ?Using your eyes as a game controller is an almost magical experience. It?s as if the game can read your mind, creating the sensation of having supernatural powers,” says Tobii. How many other magical experiences can you recommend for $15,000 that will surpass that of an eye controlled video game?

Splinter Cell: Conviction and Toy Soldiers video
demos spotted

video details and more

Microsoft knows that having solid hardware is one thing, but just as how their success in the operating system arena for desktop computers and notebooks have proved, software is another major money spinner – and it keeps great hardware going. One of the more popular “genres” (if I may have the liberty of classifying it as such) of software would be the kind that entertains, namely games. After all, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, which explains why video and computer games are extremely popular among the general populace, especially in kids, teens and university graduates. Microsoft intends to establish themselves further in the mobile operating system front by augmenting their Windows Phone platform with a major game release that will happen every week. Splinter Cell: Conviction (as seen in the video above) and Toy Soldiers are a couple of upcoming titles, with the former hitting the Windows Phone platform this February 22 for $4.99, while Toy Soldiers will arrive a week later at $2.99. Is your appetite whet yet?

Native YouTube playback on Windows Phone updated

For folks who are enjoying their Windows Phone experience immensely at the moment, did you notice anything different with YouTube’s performance on your smartphone lately? While the browser app for the Microsoft mobile platform remains at version 1.0, the actual streaming is now handled by HTML5, and initial impressions of it have been nothing but encouraging, where the entire experience does point towards a more robust nature. For example, what you see above shows off the “HQ” option (High Quality), and selecting that would dramatically improve the video quality, so much so that your eyes appreciate it a whole lot. Definitely perfect for the occasional use, and far improved compared to its predecessor. I know that the jump in quality is not as mind blowing as that from VCD to Blu-ray, but at least it is a step closer to reality. By the way, just a quick question – how many of our readers out there actually use their mobile devices to watch YouTube more often than their desktops? It is a real battery killer for sure, especially when you are connected via 3G/LTE instead of Wi-Fi.

Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich ROM video

video details and more

Samsung has promised that their hugely successful Galaxy S2 smartphone will be getting an official Ice Cream Sandwich ROM before the first quarter of the year is over, and with the leaked Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich ROM being spotted recently, the good people over at Pocketnow decided to give the ROM a go, and recorded a video of it in action. So far, initial impressions have proved to be nothing but bouquets instead of brickbats, where the platform refresh is said to be extremely stable, fast and smooth – in addition to improving the TouchWiz user interface. Some say that the battery life has been improved as well, and that is always a welcome addition for any device. Some benchmark figures that ran include AnTuTu, Quadrant, LinPack and SmartBench that clocked 6257, 4225, 46.992/78.05 and 2517, respectively.
