Microsoft sues Comet UK for selling fake Windows
discs

Microsoft flexes their legal muscles by bringing UK electronics retailer giant Comet to the courts after the software giant accused the store chain of creating and selling up to 94,000 copies of unauthorized “recovery” CDs to customers who still have Windows XP and Windows Vista as their operating systems of choice, and these acts were alleged to have happened sometime in between March 2008 and December 2009. The Guardian paper reports that Comet vehemently disputes the claims, touting that they acted out of the best interests of its customers as Microsoft had already stopped supplying recovery discs with each new computer sold. The reason behind Comet’s act was to offer customers a means to recover their Windows-based machine just in case there is a hard drive failure. (more…)

Paws doggie-cam aid search and rescue efforts

Dog’s are truly man’s best friend – and they can be properly trained to help us out in different situations such as search and rescue efforts, which is where the Paws doggie-cam comes in – being short for Portable All-terrain Wireless System. After all, a dog has an extremely keen sense of smell, and it is far more agile and capable of getting through to those nooks and crannies which humans cannot in the event of an earthquake. Rescue dogs equipped with the Paws doggie-cam hails from UK firm Wood & Douglas, who are specialized in wireless broadcast technology applications. This being their latest product will hopefully be able to save as many lives as possible down the road, where an antenna needs to be set up in the vicinity beforehand in order to receive visual information relayed from the pooch’s Paws unit. Windows 8 lets you easily reset your PC

Windows 8 resetWhenever something goes wrong on our phones or gadgets, we usually have the option to hit the “factory reset” button to get rid of everything on the device and basically just leave it in a state as if it had just been out of the box. This is a great feature to have when you accidentally screw up the device and have no idea how to fix it, or you’re giving it away to somebody else and you want to get rid of everything that you’ve downloaded onto it before.

File sharing religion is now official: Only in
Sweden

One man’s meat is another man’s poison, so the saying goes, and (illegal) file sharing might be a crime elsewhere, but it is now recognized as an official religion in Sweden. Yes sir, from last year onwards, Swedish piracy group Kopimi has continued to lobby their cause in gaining official recognition as a religion, making this one of the more creative ways that I have seen so far in an attempt to remove the legal stigma that is associated with what some quarters perceive to be the crime of file-sharing (in the context of illegal file-sharing). Of course, there were a fair number of repeated (and subsequently, failed) attempts, but if at first you don’t succeed – try again. This is what Kopimi did, and as of today, The Missionary Church of Kopimism is officially registered as a religious organization in Sweden. (more…)

WSJ: Kodak sees bankruptcy looming

How the mighty have fallen! Well, Kodak is certainly one of the more established names out there, and the film and photography giant might actually be preparing to file for bankruptcy, according to the Wall Street Journal. This particular scenario will happen in the coming weeks should it fail to sell its patents to willing buyers. Over the years, Eastman Kodak did make attempts to “reinvent itself” so to speak, as a technology company. It is a pity that the kind of consumer class digital cameras which they rolled out failed to resonate in a big way with the rest of the consumers out there, as they want a whole lot more than just a functional device. Style does win points too, you know. (more…)

Sceptre LED TV has built-in DVD player

While Blu-ray discs are starting to catch on in the past few years, there is nothing quite like a DVD still when it comes to watching recently released movies right in the comfort of your home. DVDs are cheap, and have decent enough image quality, as it does not show off all the wrinkles of your favorite actors to show just how much they have aged over the years while you grew up. Sceptre intends to offer an all-in-one solution with their latest ?24? LED Series HDTV which will come with an ultra thin DVD player alongside a trio of HDMI ports. (more…)
