Windows Phone Mango update sent out to 50% of the
world

Windows Phone logoEven though the Windows Phone Mango update was released last week and you haven’t received your Windows Phone Mango update today ? don’t worry. Microsoft hasn’t even pushed out the update to the whole world yet. According to them, as of today ? Microsoft has only made Windows Phone 7.5 available to 50% of the world. And even though it’s available to 50% of the world, there’s still no guarantee you’re in the half that’s getting it. I quote the official Windows Phone blog:

“I know some of you have questions about how Windows Phones are selected to receive the update. Put simply, it?s done totally at random, with absolutely no preference for carrier, model, or country. Random sampling is an important engineering technique to accurately measure quality and pinpoint issues early. In some cases, this can have interesting consequences: A family, for example, can have identical Windows Phones, yet only one phone might get an update notification.”

So don’t worry, and have a little patience. For those of you who’ve managed to get the Mango update, how’s your phone treating you now?

TAXAN MeoTune turns your smartphone into a
portable TV

TAXAN MeoTune
[CEATEC 2011] People in Japan love watching TV; in fact most of the phones made for the Japanese market seem to incorporate 1-Seg tuners so that they can enjoy TV while on the go. However, not all phones were built equally, and in the past, folks who decided to purchase the iPhone (and other Android devices) didn’t have access to terrestrial television. Well the folks over at TAXAN have come up with a solution to the problem.

Called the MeoTune, this gadget is a WiFi-enabled 1-Seg TV tuner that works on Android and iOS devices. The MeoTune tunes into local TV channels with regular airwaves, and transfers the content to smartphones over WiFi, which the phones can view with an app. The MeoTune has a battery life of up to four hours, which should be enough for most journeys, and can also function as an emergency battery charger for your smartphone (though your TV viewing time will be reduced). A pretty cool device, that probably won’t make it stateside, but hey – the next time you travel to Japan and you’re itching to watch TV, you won’t have to buy a new phone.

Adobe Touch Apps Suite and Adobe Creative Cloud

Adobe Photoshop Touch

Adobe Photoshop Touch

Today at its MAX 2011 conference in Los Angeles, Adobe unveiled numerous cool new products, and I was very impressed by the Touch Apps Suite, a family of six applications for Android tablets and Apple iPad. I really love d these apps at first sight, maybe because I am a designer: they are inspired by Adobe Creative Suite software which I am very familiar with.

The Adobe Touch Apps are part of Adobe Creative Cloud, also announced today , an online service that includes 20 GB of storage where creative people will be able to access desktop and tablet applications, share files, view them on different devices, transfer work into Adobe Creative Suite software and find creative services.

Adobe Photoshop Touch looks like the tablet version of Photoshop Express for iPhone, an app that I tried but did not find as good as other mobile photo applications that allow user to shoot and edit images while on-the-go. From the screen shots, Photoshop Touch looks better than its smartphone sibling, according to the product page, it seems like more of the core Photoshop (desktop) features are integrated in the tablet version. Official Hotmail app finally on Android

Hotmail app AndroidWhile most Android users are using Gmail as their default email client, there are still a number of people out there who still use Hotmail, but they’ve had no way to check it beyond using some third party app or via the web browser. Well, it looks like things have changed. Microsoft has finally released the official Hotmail app for Android devices. While it’s still very new and missing a lot of functions, it does have some key features such as push email, synced contacts, calendar, folder support and even multiple Hotmail account support.

Judging by reviews on the Android Market so far, the app is getting pretty positive reviews though there are some missing features that might make people want to hold out for awhile, at least until a more fully-fledged version comes along. But it’s good to know that Microsoft isn’t completely ignoring Android. Head over to the Android Market to download the official Hotmail app (free).

ROHM shows off Techno-jewelry at CEATEC 2011

RHOM Techno-jewelry[CEATEC 2011] While nobody likes wearing unsightly devices to help them keep track of their health, RHOM might have found a way around the problem. At CEATEC 2011, the company showed off its new range of Techno-jewelry ? UV and pulse wave sensors designed in the form of accessories that women can wear without ruining their outfits. These specially designed sensors will come in the form of earrings, bracelets, and necklaces.

Pulse wave sensors can be used to calculate the heart rate of a person, while the UV sensors can be used to detect the amount of ultraviolet radiation i.e. to be used when sunbathing so the wearer knows when they’ve had enough of UV-A and UV-B to prevent sunburnt skin or even wrinkles and blemishes. The Techno-jewelry can also send readings to a smartphone app for more detailed readings which can be used to warn the wearer of any problems.

No word on when it’ll hit the market or whether RHOM will be creating a lineup for men, but it sounds like good news for the health and fashion conscious folk out there.
