Are Sifteo Blocks The Future of Play

Sifteo – the future of play. OK – so the slogan got me hooked, but I don’t think I’m too happy with this being the future of play/gaming. Sifteo is essentially a set of 1.5″ (inch) cubes with color displays that you interact with to play a series of challenging games (for adults) or simpler [...]

Twitter to purchase TweetDeck for $50 million

TweetDeck is one of the more popular third-party software applications out there which helps you propagate your tweets, and Twitter, the social microblogging service site, intends to bring TweetDeck under their fold for a cool $50 million, at least according to sources that are close to the matter.

It seems that the cash and stock deal might very well close in under ten days, and it would be one of Twitter’s largest acquisitions to date – the company being just 5 years young itself. Just what does this deal mean for the end users? Not much, but for Twitter, it would help them obtain an application that has picked up plenty of bouquets along the way thanks to its slick interface and enhanced capabilities – features that are treasured amongst sophisticated users.

Windows 8 App Store almost in the flesh

There were rumors in the past concerning a Windows 8 app store, and it has since been proven to be the real deal today after a code check was run, resulting in numerous references. In some ways similar to the Mac App Store that some say that it clones, one will notice that the shop itself comes with ratings, reviews and developer feedback – at least according to Windows8Italia (who provided the image above as well).

Microsoft fully intends to have a solitary download on Windows Phone 7 and Xbox 360 to carry over, hence making it a whole lot more unique and letting users obtain the trial version of an app and unlocking it instead of going through the more tedious route of a forced second download.

Smartphones save Web when traffic goes up

The Internet is also known as the information superhighway, so it is no surprise that even a virtual highway can get clogged up with traffic so to speak – especially when a major news event breaks without any advance warning being sent to network administrators to anticipate such a load. For instance, Michael Jackson’s death a couple of years back proved to be a watershed moment, and more recently, the death of the FBI’s most wanted fugitive was another example. Thanks to smartphones, news sites are able to better cope with the explosion of interest where such news is concerned – so far Keynote Systems, a company that monitors the performance of websites during increases in traffic, claims that around 60% of major news sites coped without problems, leaving the remainder to suffer from outages. The thing that prevented such outages? A balanced spread of load thanks to the timing of the news, while smartphones with their always-on Internet connection helped folks access mobile sites instead of sitting in front of a computer.

Dell to introduce new ultrathin laptop in the
next few weeks

Dell Adamo

According to some of Cnet’s sources who are supposedly close to Dell, the computer manufacturer will be releasing a sleek new laptop in the coming weeks. The laptop will be designed in the spirit of their discontinued Adamo brand ? ultrathin, high performance laptops. The new laptop is rumored to pack a high-resolution 15.6″ screen, with the latest Intel Sandy Bridge Core i5 and Core i7 processors, and will be crafted from special materials (it wasn’t mentioned what these materials were). The tablets are also said to cost under $1,000.

The laptop will also be the first of many ? apparently Dell has a whole lineup planned, with future models arriving in different sizes. If rumors turn out to be true, it sure seems like Dell is committed to breaking into the MacBook Air-dominated ultrathin laptop market. Let’s hope they fare better with the new computers than they did with the cancelled Adamo brand.

Budget Samsung 4G phone headed to Sprint

Sprint Samsung SDH-D600If you thought that 4G devices were all meant to be expensive high-end phones, it looks like this doesn’t have to be the case. A new Samsung phone has recently shown up at the FCC, touting low-end specs with on surprising feature ? 4G connectivity! The phone has the model number SDH-D600 and will be on its way to Sprint in the near future, since it’s gotten approval from the Federal Communications Commission.

The Samsung SDH-D600 features a Qualcomm MSM8655 1GHz processor, a display (unspecified size) that has a 320 x 480 resolution, possibly a ticker screen (like the one found in the Samsung Continuum), and a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. It packs a 3.1megapixel rear camera, a front facing camera, Bluetooth, WiFi, GPS and of course, WiMAX support. The phone should also be arriving with Android 2.3, Gingerbread out of the box.

We’re still waiting for official word from Sprint but the device is expected to come in at the lower price bracket along with the HTC EVO Shift 4G which currently goes for $149. Any idea what this mystery 4G Sprint device is going to be?

Is WipeOut Trinity an NGP game

Look at what someone found. According to SystemLink, Sony Computer Entertainment of Europe is now listed as the owner of the domain “wipeouttrinity.com.” We knew that a WipeOut game was in development for the NGP, but we didn’t know its name. Early rumors point to the next game in the futuristic hover jet racing series as being titled WipeOut 2048 or WipeOut Trinity. What system the game will appear on is completely up in the air.

It could very much be that one game is for the NGP and one will be for the PlayStation 3. It’s been almost three years since WipeOut HD was released on the PS3, so it’s about time for a new one. With a new console prepped for launch this fall, a strong first-party game such as WipeOut could potentially shift many NGP units for Sony.
