Microsoft’s foray into the world of gaming hardware has been a bittersweet story – while it afforded a fair number of competitors to other more established players in the market, it seems as though it has reached the end of the road, where the company is tipped to kill of the brand in its entirety where gaming peripherals are concerned. The mains reson behind this closure is simple – economics. Microsoft claims that the PC peripheral market has far too many players, so they are unable to provide the relevant support and hardware required to keep up with the Joneses at the very least. What do you think of the idea of having Big Brother monitor the whereabouts and movement of phones so that they can find a more efficient way of ensuring smooth traffic? That is what China’s government is mulling over, especially what with the recent 62-mile traffic jam that took nine days to clear up in Beijing last August still fresh in peoples’ minds. The government being what it is, you can’t help but tread with caution on this offer, with the upside of they doing what they mean, helping reduce congestion in the long run through a better planning system and knowing who is going where, although there is always the danger of them using this as an excuse to track down fugitives and enemies of the state.

The Android 3.0 Honeycomb operating system is something that targets tablets as it was specially optimized for that range of devices, but that doesn’t mean it cannot see action on other platforms, right? Here is a Gingerbread update for the Samsung Galaxy S, where it hasn’t been made official just yet although XDA-Developers are already offering a way to get your hands on it – unofficially, of course. This build hails from Samsung directly, where it has been given the TouchWiz 3 skin while sporting a functional Android Market, Swype capability and GPS navigation support. Right now, the Android 2.3.2 Gingerbread build plays nice only with the Samsung Galaxy S I9000 (European version), although there is a chance of developers porting the ROM to the US variants which dot the American landscape where the Galaxy S line is concerned.

Could we be wrong, having brought you incorrect information of the Motorola XOOM (Wi-Fi only version) retailing for $730 thereabouts after conversion from the UK price? Over here, you can see an image captured at Sam’s Club, where the XOOM has been priced at just $539 – never mind the fact that this is still a significant amount to many people out there who are currently struggling with their monthly bills. Perhaps it is just an error on the placard, especially when you consider the ?Android 2.0 Homeycomb? mistake. What do you think – is this a ploy to generate interest?

Thanko does come up with some pretty zany devices from time to time, but here is something which is much more useful than the rest – we’re talking about a pair of earphones which will feature an integrated alarm – this means you can always jolt yourself awake even though you’ve fallen asleep to your favorite tunes. Guess it will come in handy for folks who tend to make long commutes from work to home (and vice versa), knowing that the train will stop at a specific time. Perhaps it would be better if this device had some sort of noise supression technology built in for added effectiveness.

Yes, it was only a matter of time and you surely don’t need to have Master Yoda’s mastery of the Force to realize that George Lucas can’t get enough of the green stuff, and has decided to convert his perennial gold mine, the Star Wars movies, into 3D. Yup, all half dozen of them will be out in 3D sometime down the road, with the first of the six getting a February 10, 2012 release. Perhaps we can now smack Jar Jar Binks in 3D? At least another generation of kids will grow up with Star Wars making an impact in their lives, right?

If you thought that the recent Monopoly boardgame revamp that incorporates a computer inside was uber cool, how about the (i)Pirates board game that you see here? This unique title will let you use your iPhone in a totally different manner, as you “sail” your pirate ship across the board, with your iPhone placed on various sections of the board which are subsequently displayed on the screen – alongisde your ship and different animated elements, of course. One can only presume that the iPhone?s camera is working all the time to know just which section on the board it is on, unless Apple’s handset has gained some magical clairvoyant powers that we’re not aware of. This does seem to be a pretty engaging method of keeping yourself entertained among friends – just make sure an iPhone charger is nearby always then.

Since there is plenty of value if you as a service provider offers the right kind of software, it makes perfect sense for Fujitsu to introduce their very own online e-book store from May 2011 onwards – where this move intends to have Fujitsu expand its PC and mobile phone business in Japan, while letting customers enjoy digital publications in an unprecedented manner. This move does seem limited to Japan only for the moment (and the immediate future), as all digital content will be provided through a partnership with Dai Nippon Printing Co and DNP’s affiliate, MobileBook.jp Inc. This partnership will see one gain access to around 300,000 magazines, white papers, statistical information, survey reports, and other publications that target business oriented people.

The HP Metal Watch concept device was birthed from a partnership with Fossil – and it is definitely something off the beaten path for HP, considering they’re the world’s largest PC manufacturers at the moment, also churning out calculators if you’re so inclined – but watches? That’s something new, which is why the Metal Watch is still a conceptual idea that sees the watch run a “full software stack”, although we are not privy to the kind of interaction method with the Metal Watch. Anyone wants to venture a guess and figure out just what kind of display it comes with, alongside the other internal components? Perhaps HP will actually realize this timepiece in due time when technology catches up with the idea.
