Synaptics announces Proximity Sensors

Synaptics have announced the general OEM/ODM availability of their proximity sensors that ought to see action outside of Microsoft’s Wireless Entertainment Desktop 8000 Bluetooth Keyboard in the near future. This is a unique proposition, as the technology is smart enough to recognize human presence which can then be linked to various controls such as adjusting the backlight for the perfect setting. Take for instance, Microsoft's mentioned keyboard - it enters standby mode to save power whenever the user moves away. With a new digital photo frame by Synaptics utilizing the same technology, it will definitely improve battery life while boasting proximity-controlled touch sensitive buttons to impress ordinary folk.

Parasolar Concept

While you're shielding yourself from the harsh glare of the sun with an umbrella, why not kill two birds with one stone by letting the same umbrella convert solar energy into electricity? That's the main idea behind the Parasolar concept designed by Oded Shorer. It features photovoltaic laminated panels that will harness the power of sunlight, transferring converted power into the handle which can subsequently be used to juice up gadgets such as portable consoles, digital cameras and cell phones connected to it. The Parasolar offers support for one 12 volts output and two USB sockets. Would be nice to see a taser incorporated into the Parasolar as you can use up it’s energy reserves to zap baddies on your way home.

Well, the new DirecTV Sat-Go portable satellite television system ought to do the trick for you, as this nifty device packs in an integrated antenna, receiver and television screen into one tiny, portable device, allowing you to enjoy any DirecTV programming as long as the skies remain clear. You'll need to cough up $999 beforehand though if you want to tote around your TV shows wherever you go. I wonder if this system is able to perform video recording - now that'd definitely be something worth drooling over.

Industrial designer Jason Chang has rolled out his creation - the S.P.I.C.E (Stimulating Play Inspires Creative Expression) interactive table that is meant to spark creativity in strategic project development within a group, making brainstorming sessions much more fun by introducing the play concept. Should it ever be realized, this will definitely spice things up in social gatherings (no pun intended), expanding the boundaries of one's creativity to come up with yet another 'Eureka!' moment many thousands of years later. Alternatively, you can always take some booze or weed and get 'inspired', if you get my drift.

Apple shows off its soft side by officially rolling out its largest back-to-school promotion ever by the company, giving away free 8GB iPod touch to both students as well as educational staffers who buy a qualifying Mac. In reality, this promotion involves a $299 rebate that is the same price as the aforemendtioned iPod touch, although the slightly better off can always top up that amount to pick up 16GB and 32GB models if they like. Alternatively, participants can also choose to receive a free 8GB iPod nano if they like, but if I were you, I'd settle for the iPod touch instead. If you're wondering how to qualify, you'll need to make sure that :-

The iPod and Mac system must be purchased at the same time and appear on the same receipt. Apple lists qualifying Mac systems as the MacBook, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, and Mac Pro. The Mac mini, previous-generation 17” iMac, Apple TV, iPhone, iPod shuffle, iPod classic, 4GB iPod nano, and refurbished products are not eligible. The products must be purchased from the Apple Online Store for Education Individuals, an Apple Retail Store, Apple Telesales, or an Apple Authorized Campus Store located in the 50 United States or the District of Columbia.

The promotion will end this September 15th or while stocks last, whichever comes first.
