Apple Lawsuit Fails Against NT-K

In the patent war that Apple is waging against a number of competitors, there are victories and defeats. Today is certainly a day of defeat as the NT-K tablet (from a Spanish manufacturer Nuevas Tecnologías y Energías Catalá) has won in court and is now seeking damages from Apple, which had previously successfully blocked the NT-K tablet sales.

Interestingly, the NT-K creators say that they were not the only target of Apple’s lawsuit, but that others have preferred giving up rather than defend themselves. In the meantime, there are more pending lawsuits elsewhere around the world, and so far Apple has mostly won based on “technical merit” (against the Galaxy phones in Europe) rather than based on the idea that others copy its designs.

Obviously, we’ve seen that rulings can vary from country to country, but is it the beginning of the end for this “design-based” patent war in which Apple claims that it has invented the tablet as we know it and that no-one else should be able to design a device that looks like a rectangular display?

HP Slate 2 takes over the Slate 500

I know that a number of professionals were interested in the HP Slate, and it so happens that it just got a refresh today with… the HP Slate 2. From the outside, it mostly looks the same, but there is now a 32GB option (the maximum is 64GB), the battery life has gained a theoretical 30mn and Swype for windows has been integrated, which is great because the default windows keyboard is not very good, and Swype is pretty awesome, especially on a tablet. The second upgrade is rather a good downgrade, in terms of pricing: at $699, the Slate 2 is more affordable than the Slate 500 (by $100), and we welcome the change.

iOS 5 bugs affecting battery life, fix coming

iPhone 4S Review

You may have heard that some iPhone 4S users have been complaining about their battery life as of late. There are many speculations floating around, but basically, Apple came out and said that they know about a number of bugs in iOS 5 that will affect the battery life negatively, and that a fix is coming.

?We have found a few bugs that are affecting battery life and we will release a software update to address those in a few weeks.?

In our own tests, we have noticed that the iPhone 4S battery life is inferior to the iPhone 4, even when both are running on iOS. This may suggest that beyond the software issues, the iPhone 4S is architecturally more power-hungry than the iPhone 4.

Do you have battery life issues with the iPhone 4S, and if so, how do you use it, and how much apps do you have running in the background? We’re curious to compile some data.

Your Shape Fitness Evolved 2012 New Trailer

A new video of Your Shape Fitness Evolved 2012 has been posted on Youtube by Microsoft as the game is set to launch next week on November 8. This official video from Ubisoft is much better than the previous one that came out in June, it shows different situations, and you see more of the game – without the annoying background voice that the summer trailer.

Overall, it looks like a cool sports/fitness game, and even if you won’t become massively muscular with it, some exercise can’t hurt. In my experience, people who aren’t usually gamers may like it a lot, and the fact that they can track their progress and improve slowly is actually a very good thing. Many people try to get in shape very fast and usually lack the motivation to do so. After all, health is a long term project.

Panasonic Internet Social Network app: watch
shows and Tweet simultaneously

Panasonic VIERA Internet Social Network app If you spend 24/7 of your life on social networks like Facebook or Twitter and you own a Panasonic smart TV with VIERA Connect, you’re in luck. Panasonic has released a bunch of new apps for its VIERA Connect-equipped 2011 VIERA HDTVs, with one of them being the Internet Social Network app. The app allows users to watch their content they would normally watch on the TV i.e. their favorite TV shows, while they leave their favorite social networks running side by side.

The social network (Facebook or Twitter) will be in a sidebar displaying the newsfeed/main timeline, while the show will be taking up most of the screen. Users can update their statuses or post new tweets without having to leave their show, which makes it great for folks who love letting the world know exactly what they’re watching or what they think about what they see.

Other apps being released by Panasonic include: PlayJam (a game channel with multiple game apps) and BigFlix (an app that lets users access Bollywood Video on Demand). All these three apps will be made free to VIERA HDTVs for free.
