If you know your Star Wars ? or even if you didn’t, I’m sure you would remember Han Solo getting trapped in carbonite in The Empire Strikes Back. Well thanks to the power of the Microsoft Kinect, we too can be frozen albeit on screen instead of in person. Some developers have managed to come up with a way to replicate the effect of being frozen in carbonite with the use of a Kinect. While it isn’t as detailed as the sculptures used in the Star Wars movies, the 3D model render can be exported to a 3D model to be 3D-printed out! So if you’ve ever wanted to have a carbonite mold of yourself ? keep an eye out on the program. The developers will be releasing it to the public as open source in the near future.
Hit the break to watch a video of the Kinect Han Solo carbonite program in action. For the Star Wars fanboys, it’s one step closer to getting into Han Solo’s shoes. Now if only someone could make the Chewbacca emulator with the Kinect?

If there’s one thing beneficial about the pirate community, it’s the speed of which things can be spread with their services. So when it came to pushing out and promoting a new, relatively unknown movie, a movie production studio called Iron Cat has decided to share its upcoming film, Barzda (The Beard) on Lithuania’s most popular torrent tracker, LinkoManija, along with a number of other trackers.
Iron Cat is no stranger to BitTorrent, has done something similar in the past before with good results, hence its willingness to give it a second go. Its good to see companies recognizing the benefits of such useful technology and not only the negative connotations that has been associated with P2P file sharing. True, the technology is being used for illegal file trading, but it also has its uses when working within legal boundaries. After all, obscurity is problem worse than piracy.
Hopefully more movie studios can see such the benefits (it’s cheap, fast and effective) of using BitTorrent to distribute their content in the future. How many of you use BitTorrent to legally check out indie movies?

Electrolux Design Lab holds an annual competition where they challenge students to come up with home appliances based on a theme. Well for the 2010 competition which just ended on Sunday, the theme was “The 2nd Space Age” where students design appliances that would feel at home in the year 2050.
One of the stand-out entries is from Russian student, Yuriy Dmitriev with his Bio Robot Fridge. This super thin fridge makes use of a special gel-like substance to keep your food cold and fresh. The substance is odorless and non-sticky so you can put things in and take them out just as they were, without having any additional greens on your food.

Somebody needs to give Sony a break. After being attacked over a week ago, and only just starting to recover, Sony has a bout of bad news again. This time it isn’t the Sony PlayStation Network, but the Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) servers. The SOE servers were taken down earlier this morning, with Sony citing it was due to an intrusion.
Now, it has been reported that personal details and about 12,700 credit card numbers were stolen have been stolen from the SOE servers. The SOE network is responsible for hosting games like DC Universe Online, EverQuest, and Free Realms ? so you can imagine the magnitude of such a crime. However a silver lining surrounds this dark cloud; the stolen details are claimed to be from the year 2007, which means most of the credit card info stolen should have been expired by now.
There’s no telling when SOE will be back up, so for folks looking forward to their MMO fixes will have to find an alternate hobby in the meantime. Stay tuned for more updates.

Add to myYahoo! As is common with AMD CPUs, the next in the Phenom-II X4 Black Edition series is being released; the Phenom-II X4-980BE HDZ980FBK4DGM. The X4-980BE will take over as AMDs flagship quad-core processor and guess what, it is 100MHz faster than the current quad-core king at 3.7GHz. Without surprise the Phenom-II X4-980BE will be released at the same price the X4-975BE was released in January 2011 with an MSRP of $195. And because we are just that reliable, Benchmark Reviews is here to give you the run down on the Phenom-II X4-980BE to show you how it stacks up against its younger brothers and the similarly priced (though slightly more expensive) Core i5-2500K.
