One billion app download barrier broken over the
holiday week

‘Tis indeed the season to be jolly, at least according to the figures shown for the time period of Christmas Day all the way to New Year’s Day, where over a billion apps were downloaded for both iOS and Android-powered platforms. This is in stark contrast to what the weeks of December 4th to 17th raked in, measuring at a “mere” 750 million apps. Certainly a whole lot of people received iPhones and Android smartphones under the Christmas tree this year, hence the possibility of them going on a downloading frenzy after that. Surely the number of Angry Birds fans has grown since then, and we do expect to see some others get their fair share of Grand Theft Auto III action going on while they’re on-the-go. There is an estimate of more than 20 million iOS and Android devices having gotten activated during the same period of time where 1.2 billion apps were downloaded. Now these are figures not to be trifled with, and any hardware manufacturer worth their salt will certainly appreciate the kind of support that their devices are seeing right now.

Fix the lag on your Galaxy Nexus

The perception is this – the Samsung Galaxy Nexus is the most desirable Android-powered smartphone at the moment, simply because it runs on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich with powerful hardware that enables it to perform just about all tasks it is supposed to with aplomb. Well, some owners have found out the hard way that not everything works as it was supposed to, where they claim that many apps perform at a mediocre level at best. Is there a way to do away with such lag? Thankfully, the answer is an avid “Yes!”, where you will need to enter the “Settings” menu, scroll right down and tap on Developer options. Look for “Force GPU rendering” and check it. Follow that up by shutting down all of your apps in the multitasking tray simply by flicking them off the screen, but the easier way is to restart your Galaxy Nexus. Once done, the Galaxy Nexus should no longer plod around like a tortoise, but instead, will perform with a significant swagger. The most noticeable improvement? It will scroll a whole lot faster. Anyone tried this with or without success?

Classpad enters budget tablet market in India

As we are now in 2012, austerity measures are being put in place just about anywhere and everywhere you turn to. After all, the world economy is not exactly booming, and there is plenty of firefighting to be done by governments worldwide to make sure they do not go under. India, however, is set to continue on a boom, and the budget tablet market scenario heats up with the introduction of yet another player – the Classpad, targeting schools and young students. Developed by Classteacher Learning Systems, the Classpad’s main function is to improve learning and interaction in the classroom. Needless to say, should it take off successfully, Classteacher Learning Systems is not going to lose the chance of it being released to the masses. (more…)

Apple GameStore app released by accident

There is a saying, “You cannot see an accident coming”, but sometimes, accidents can be prevented if one is careful enough. It seems that one of Apple’s internal testing applications has sneaked its way into the iOS App Store – bearing all the hallmarks of a ninja. When you search for “gamestore”, the application will show up, where it will retail for a comfortable $0.99. This internal app paves the way for in-app purchases, it does seem to resemble an app that is currently in its testing phase – especially when you consider the fact that the in-app purchases do not do anything at all for the moment, being described as “This application allows you to buy different things from within the app.” (more…)

In computer cases, it's a constant battle between price, function, and style-- as the saying goes, Pick any two .
