Lookout, a mobile security company, has issued a report that illustrates the rise of applications infected by malware (programs built with a malicious intent) on mobile platforms. I was particularly interested by how “pirates” can sneak malicious code in apps that were originally legitimate.
The graph above shows that a malicious that instead of creating a bogus application from scratch, pirates have adapted to using popular and legitimate applications has “hosts” for their malicious code. They start by adding code to an already existing app, then submit this application to a 3rd party app store where the original app may not already reside (each app has a unique ID for each store). To lure unsuspecting users to download the app, the pirates use advertising, phishing or spam sites – whichever works better.

If you’re in charge of a country that has a major issue with following the road rules, especially when it comes to parking what do you do? Issue tickets that people can just pay off and continue breaking the law? Well, if you want to take things up a notch, you can always give the public a demonstration to remember ? and that’s what the mayor of Vilnius, capital city of Lithuania; Arturos Zuorokas did.
He held a public demonstration where he rode a tank over an illegally parked car and announced, “That’s what will happen if you park your car illegally!” While the demonstration was clearly staged, it does show how serious the mayor is when it comes to dealing with people who think they are above the law. Now that is one guy we don’t want to cross paths with on a bad day. Check out the video demonstration after the break:

In an effort to prevent student-teacher relationships from developing, the state of Missouri’s governor has just put into effect a law that makes it illegal for teachers to directly communicate with students, regardless of whether they’re still under their tutelage or not. Here’s what the law states:
“Teachers cannot establish, maintain or use a work-related website unless it is available to school administrators and the child?s legal custodian, physical custodian or legal guardian. Teachers also cannot have a non work-related website that allows exclusive access with a current or former student.”

The small device shown above has all the qualities of a huge potential medical success, to not only detect AIDS, but also other diseases like syphilis, malaria and hepatitis. At its heart there is a micro-chip that can analyze a tiny amount of blood (one micro-liter) and search for various diseases. Additional diseases can be added to the test for a marginal cost, possibly because the chip is programmable – We are not certain. The chip itself cost less than a dollar, and the whole setup, with the reader (left), is said to cost about $100.

Thanks to the folks over at MyDroidWorld, all the speculation about Motorola’s upcoming 4G LTE phone, the Droid Bionic, can come to an end. One of MDW forum users spotted the specs of the phone on the MotoDev page, giving us confirmation about what will make up the internals phone when it is finally released (we still don’t have an official date but current reports put it at September 1st).
So what’s inside this highly-anticipated Android device? A 1GHz OMAP4430 dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, a 4.3″ qHD screen, an 8-megapixel rear camera (capable of recording 1080p video), a VGA front-facing camera, HDMI 1.4, Android 2.3.4, Webtop capabilities and of course 4G LTE support. Now the only question left is: is it going to be worth waiting for? I guess that’s for you to decide when it is finally released.

If you’re a fan of making calls from Gmail, you’re in luck. Google has just announced that it has upgraded the service to support over 38 different languages, and has lowered the call rates to more than 150 destinations around the world. This makes calling from Gmail a lot more accessible to consumers worldwide, especially those outside of the US and those who don’t primarily use English.

One of the main problems about upgrading your hard disk is having to backup, transfer files, and reinstalling all your programs. The hassle alone usually puts people off from upgrading their hard disk drives, which means they usually keep them in their computers until they fail before they decide to do anything about it. Well the folks over at Samsung have decided to make the whole process easier, to encourage consumers to purchase solid state drives (SSD) from them.
