USB Equipped Classic Joystick

By Andrew LiszewskiIt never feels right when you play a classic MAME-emulated game using a keyboard or a modern controller that’s been designed with ergonomics in mind. Microsoft to acquire California-based start-up
Canesta

Microsoft to acquire California-based start-up Canesta

Microsoft has flexed their financial muscles yet again, and will be looking to bring Canesta from California into their fold. Why so, you ask? Well, Canesta is a leader in 3D sensing technology for starters, owning 44 patents which represent the company's breakthroughs in many areas which are critical to enabling natural user interfaces (NUIs), with Microsoft's own Kinect for example, across multiple platforms. This acquisition would see both Canesta's products and technology to enter Microsoft's fold, where the single chip CMOS 3D sensors and imaging chips can enable fine-grained, three-dimensional depth-perception in a wide range of applications. How will this shape up in Microsoft's future NUIs for both its Kinect and future operating system otherwise known as Windows 8? Only time will tell, and will Canesta employees receive free Windows Phone 7 handsets also?

YouTube founder Chad Hurley calls it quits

YouTube founder Chad Hurley calls it quits

YouTube founder Chad Hurley has announced that he will be ending day-to-day involvement with the video-sharing site, where his position will then be handed over to longtime Googler Salar Kamangar. Don't get Hurley wrong, as YouTube will grow from strength to strength since Salar Kamangar has been effectively running the site for the last few months already. Google has yet to profit from the $1.65bn it paid for YouTube four years ago, so it remains to be seen whether Kamangar turn this business unit of Google's to a more profitable outlook. Where else do you think Chad will turn his attentions to after this?

PlayStation Phone confirmed

PlayStation Phone confirmed

It is now concrete - the PlayStation Phone (aka Zeus), subject to many rumors and speculation over the weekend, is real, ready and waiting to hit the market. While the prospect of this smartphone arriving on the scene does entice the taste buds of geeks everywhere, Masaru Kato, Sony’s chief financial officer, has all but confirmed its existence by saying (via an interpreter), “As for the new PSP product, as mentioned, I know that you are not asking me to tell you when we will be coming out with a new product, but there is a gaming market based on [the] cellphones, and there are many changes that are being seen [with] Nintendo, as well as ourselves, in the field of the product for the gamers. And there are smartphones and others or even cellphones gaming markets are very popular here in Japan. So the market itself is very... expanding.” It would be interesting to see how the final device will shape up in terms of processing power, quality of games as well as smartphone capability.

KWID watch tells time via hourglass

KWID watch tells time via hourglass

The concept of "time" can be lost upon little ones whose minds have yet to develop fully, so how do you get started on their training? Well, there's this thing called the KWID, a unique timepiece which comes with a digital hourglass (less stuff for them to break) that delivers a more visual and easily understandable representation on just how long a defined time period is. Basically, when you let them know that they have to turn off the Nintendo in five minutes' time, they can see just how quickly the minutes will vanish, obeying you before you bring out the rod. Of course, once your little ones have grown up, the KWID watch need not be discarded since it comes with a traditional clock face which show off the time displayed. A range of playful animations help make learning more enjoyable, so you might want to consider forking out around $37 for this rather educational timepiece. Hopefully it lasts the rigors of an active child's life!

A-solar unveils new solar chargers for the iPhone

A-solar unveils new solar chargers for the iPhone

A-solar of the Netherlands has just announced that they have a new range solar chargers specially made for the iPhone, where it will boast energy efficient solar cells which juice up the li-ion battery, making it the ideal tool to carry around if you happen to live in countries where there is strong sunlight all year round. Should it be particularly cloudy, you can always rely on USB connectivity to get the job done, now how about that? Being small and lightweight, these A-solar chargers will play nice with the iPhone 3G, 3GS and 4. We would say that sheikhs with their blinged out iPhones might want to consider this as their next accessory purchase. [Press Release]
