[DEMO Spring 2011] Swivel is an augmented reality app that uses either a regular webcam or Kinect to allow people to try clothes virtually. Another company unveiled a similar solution at DEMO: Webcam Social Shopper by Zugara. Since Kinect launched a few months ago, I was envisioning this kind of product that can help boost sales in fashion e-commerce.
Swivel is fun to use although the graphic result is not as good as we would like, but I am pretty confident that the technology will evolve enough to provide a higher visual quality in the next years.
Facecake, the company developing Swivel, plans to integrate its technology in retailers website or in stores, allowing customers to make their choice faster without having to wander around to find the clothes they like.
Check the video to see how it works and how it looks.

Being a farmer is hard work even though one has had technology to help out over the past century, but still, you exert much more physical energy on the field than say, an air conditioned office where you’re decked out in your suit and tie. Well, here is one more automated process that might help farmers grow that paunch larger – the Prospero robot that will plant seeds on your behalf. Boasting five legs, this machine is capable of doing all it requires to grow a plant. A Parallax Propeller chip which has been mounted on a Schmart Board will let the Prospero work autonomously, navigating in any direction and avoid obstacles. A sensor located right underneath its body will be able to know where seeds have been deployed, and if it thinks that a particular spot underneath it needs some seeds, it will dig a hole, plant the seed and spray the ground in white to indicate success. If you’re a farmer, have the Prospero do the hard work for you while you enjoy some Harvest Moon on your Nintendo DSi.

Quanta Computers isn’t exactly the first name that you think of when it comes to tablet devices, but then again that is because they are an OEM (original equipment manufacturer) from Taiwan, so chances are you would have seen their stuff rebranded under other monikers. Well, the Quanta QV3A tablet takes a different route this time around, having arrived at the FCC this week. Test results of the QV3A do point towards Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, although the FCC has remained silent on 3G or 4G mobile broadband support. Other hardware specifications that we can glean from the image include a front-facing webcam, a microSD memory card slot, a micro USB port and a headphone jack. Of course, the presence of Home, Menu, and additional buttons point toward the Google Android 2.x or earlier operating system. No idea on pricing or availability as at press time though.

Verizon’s first Samsung 4G LTE handset is known as the Stealth V, where it has finally made an appearance over at the FCC today. This device is known as the SCH-i510 if you’re a sucker for model numbers, and it has already debuted at CES earlier this year. The Stealth V will most probably beat out the HTC ThunderBolt when it comes to being the first LTE device on Verizon?s new 4G network as mentioned earlier, where it will sport a 4.3? Super AMOLED display, Samsung?s dual-core Orion processor, an 8-megapixel camera with 1080p video recording capability, Android 2.2 (with the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update more or less a certainty down the road), HDMI out and a micro USB port. With it having passed through the FCC’s hoops, we can surely expect it to arrive earlier than the original summer 2011 date, right?

Now here is an interesting crystal ball that will definitely set tongues wagging the moment your friends and curious family members lay their eyes on it – after all, this 3.9″ crystal ball actually displays a hologram of sorts on the inside, and it would make for the perfect advertisement fodder if you happen to own a business. Then again, this Japan-made product might not be your cup of tea since it sports a pretty expensive price tag that goes beyond the $4,000 mark, so to use this and hook it up to your DVD player via video-in isn’t such a good idea – better spend that money on a nice, large flat screen display instead.

Luxury automobile manufacturer Rolls Royce intends to go green as well by showcasing their Phantom Experimental Electric at the Geneva Motor Show, although we are not too sure just how serious the company is in lowering the amount of emissions of their flagship model since this model will not enter production but remain as an experimental car, where Rolls Royce intends to use it to gauge customers’ opinions. Hope springs eternal, and we don’t see why there isn’t a market for it – after all, if you’re rich enough to own a Rolls Royce, certainly you don’t mind forking out a bit more money for an electric version if it exists, and you must be informed enough to know that the world’s in dire straits ecologically, needing all the help it can get to remain sustainable for the next generation?

Volkswagen might just bring back the good old hippie days with their Bulli concept which is being paraded at the Geneva Motor Show, as this modern re-imagination of the legendary car offers built-in iPad support as a sign of the times, where your iOS-powered device will function as a control station for music as well as other sources of entertainment and information. Needless to say, if you have a 3G-connected iPad, that would be just wonderful since it means easy access to the Internet wherever you are as long as there is a decent connection. The Bulli relies on a lithium-ion battery pack that will power the 113-horsepower electric motor, and according to Volkswagen, this Bulli will be juiced up from an exhausted battery in just an hour. Quit the concept talk and start rolling this off your production lines already, VW!

Apple isn’t going to be too happy about all of the hacks that are going on, and here we are with yet another hack which will add another straw to the proverbial camel’s back, although it won’t break it just yet. This hack will let you play your PS3 titles over on your iOS device, although the process is not as easy as it sounds and will involve a fair number of technical wizardry and knowledge. After all, you will need to have your own capture device, input converter, USB mouse and keyboard, a PC, and the most essential ingredient of them all – the PS3. These devices will work in tandem with a custom build of everyAir, letting you make your input while checking out exactly what the PS3 is displaying. Great for a novelty moment, but not practical when it comes to serious gaming.

Seagate has begun to ship their Barracuda XT drive which intends to offer a solution in overcoming the existing 2.1 TB barrier without sacrificing on user friendliness, hoping to go one up on its competitors in the process. Drive manufacturers don’t have it easy at the moement, since the complexity of the new (UEFI) Unified Extensible Firmware Interface specifications translates to it being adopted on a small scale due to the widespread “availability”, or should we say, presence of bugs, not to mention the need for additional testing and support. Apart from that, legacy PC BIOS designs and device drivers and older operating systems such as Windows XP cannot go beyond the 2.1TB level. The Barracuda XT drive comes in to act as a bridge solution, and could see legacy systems access the full 3TB thanks to its Seagate DiscWizard software. Interested in getting the Barracuda XT 3TB for your next gaming rig? It is going to retail for $279.99 then.

Google offers more than free laptops after all at this years Game Developer Conference in San Francisco, as the company has also given guests who attended key sessions on Android game development a free Nexus S or a free Motorola XOOM – it really depends on whether one preferred to develop for the phone or tablet platform – never mind if some of the folks who received these were not developers at all. The two stock devices will come with Android 2.3 and 3.0 respectively, which means you are not shackled by the restrictions which are usually imposed by carriers. Do you think that portable gaming on the Android platform will arrive at higher levels than before from this year onwards, and will it be able to give the iOS platform a run for its money? If you were wondering just what the big deal concerning the Nexus S is all about, head on here.
