Android virus does voice recordings on the quiet

Who says that phones are safe enough to use that there is no need for anti-virus software? That might be true in the older days before color displays and Internet connectivity on the handset became the norm, but now, we have mobile operating systems that do resemble that of a PC in many ways, hence opening up some of the same doors as well to external threats. There is word of a virus which targets Android-powered devices which is touted to be able to covertly record phone conversations. Security researchers at CA Technologies stumbled upon this Trojan which has call recording functionality – making it far more threatening compared to earlier viruses that logged information (phone numbers and call duration) at best.

ICE Smart Android device occupies no mans land

A device that has a 5″ display is surely too large to be a comfortable smartphone to use even with the right operating system, while it won’t fare too well as a tablet either since the screen size is far too small. Where does that place it? In no man’s land, of course. The ICE Smart device that runs on Android 2.3 Gingerbread falls under this category (unfortunately), so it needs the consumer market to create a niche for it to survive, otherwise I suspect we won’t see too many 5″ devices floating around in the future.

BlackBerry Bold 9900 for T-Mobile coming this
August 31st

Will the last day of August mark the first day of the BlackBerry Bold 9900′s life over at T-Mobile? That seems to be the case as said smartphone has already gone through the rigors over at the FCC, showing off support for T-Mobile?s HSPA+ network, while a leaked screenshot (whether on purpose or not, that remains another can of worms) pointed towards an August 31st release date. You can pick it up with a $50 mail-in rebate alongside $20 monthly data plan to go along with your Berry goodness.

Sure, that means you no longer have a new phone to show off to your mates during this summer, but look on the bright side of things – at least you are able to have a new phone for autumn! The only thing is, why did the person who captured this leaked screenshot not get details on the final price point? That would be what most people are looking forward to anyways, as a mail-in rebate is more or less a given these days. Well, another 30 more days to save up for one of these puppies if you are interested!

Nokero solar phone charger targets the poor

It is said that ?500 million of the world?s cell phone owners have no access to electricity? – at least according to a Hong Kong and Denver-based company who claims that solar power charging panels are the solution to this question. It does make me wonder though, are there 500 million people in this world who know that they have no access to electricity, and yet proceeded to purchase a cell phone? I do doubt those statistics as it just doesn’t make that much sense, it would be as though purchasing a car without having access to gas stations. I digress – Nokero’s intention to help this half billion people gain portable power to juice up their hungry handsets has resulted in solar-power charging panels that were specially designed without costing too much.

Apple TV gets software updates

The second generation Apple TV has now hit version 4.3, where it will allow you to part with your hard-earned money to purchase High Definition TV shows from iTunes itself. It must be noted that each purchase made on other iOS-powered devices (such as the iPod touch or iPad and its successor) or via iTunes will also show up automatically on Apple TV, ready and raring to go. With Vimeo, you are also able to browse and watch millions of user-uploaded videos that are currently available on the Vimeo service – without forking out a single cent to boot. Now how about that?
says the update will enable:

This is a departure from the original Apple TV that enabled users to rent movies and shows only, without any option to actually purchase those titles for future viewing. US-based users will also see Apple roll out preliminary iCloud support using this update, letting you download all over again some of the purchased TV shows. Too bad movies aren’t supported just yet though, but hopefully that is on its way.
