LG 42LF75

With a veritable boatload of affordable Hi-Def tellies knocking around at the moment, why should you consider shelling out your hard-earned monies for LG's latest offering? Because it looks sharp as a diamond-tipped tack, that's why!

Yes, this angular, moody black "Design Art" 42-inch model is certainly among the best-looking cheapies we've seen, knocking the true bargain basement models for six and even edging out sexy-looking numbers from the likes of Sony and Samsung. Sure, it's a bit placcy up close, but at this price that's to be expected.

Thankfully its beauty isn't just skin deep, either. This is a 1920 x 1080 LCD with the chops to display HD DVD or Blu-ray movies at full 1080p and 24 frames-per-second. Home cinema fans will love that stuff. And if you've got a Hi-Def source or three, plugging them all in is a snap thanks to the trio of HDMI sockets.

Picture quality couldn't be ranked with the best around, but it's still decent. Colours are bright and crisp, the black levels are okay for LCD and motion is smooth, even if you're playing quick-paced games or watching the footie. Sound quality isn't much cop, to be honest, but the near-invisible speakers will do an acceptable job until you can kit your pad out with some proper home cinema gear.

All things considered, this is one of the best lower-end 42-inch models we've seen. It's cheap, it's good looking and it performs well. Nuff said.
