In 2011, Google announced their plans to buy Motorola Mobility, spending $12.5 billion in the process. Naturally with an acquisition of this magnitude, there would be a lot of red tape, such as approval by shareholders, the US Justice Department and antitrust regulators. So far it seems that the shareholders have already given their content, and now there are reports that suggest the US Justice Department could be giving the Google/Motorola Mobility (?Googorola?) acquisition the green light.
While the US Justice Department could be clearing the deal as early as next week, the European Commission has their ruling set for the 13th of February, and while it looks like it might go through, there are reports that antitrust regulators are still worried about Google?s commitment to license out Motorola?s patents to their competitors under the FRAND (fair, reasonable, and nondiscriminatory) rules. If the deal is approved by all parties, without doubt it will be interesting to see what Motorola can achieve and produce with Google?s backing.
