More misery for HD-DVD

Blu-Ray has taken another major step towards all-out victory in the hi-def wars today, with two major US retailers giving HD-DVD a very public slapdown.

Gadget giant Best Buy, the biggest player when it comes to top notch electronics in the US, has confirmed it is going to recommend its punters plump for Blu-Ray.

While they'll still stock HD-DVD, it'll get little or no prominence compared to the massive point-of-sale displays Sony is bound to be sending out as we speak.

Elsewhere, online rental service Netflix has said it'll stop sending its massive user base HD-DVDs, instead opting to go exclusively blue. Ouch!

Considering they've mailed out over a billion DVDs in the past eight years, this is a major blow for the red corner of the market. They say the move is down to Hollywood studios coming out in favour of Sony's HD vision and customers not showing any interest in HD-DVD.

Blockbuster stopped stocking HD-DVD in its US stores last year, and during CES, Warner and New Line both came out in favour of Blu-Ray.

It really looks like its curtains for the much-maligned format. We expect that there will be even more price cuts to try and get us buying their decks.
